About The Position

Applied Materials Ion Implant Defect Science group is seeking a Physicist/Scientist to join our team! We are a small, highly collaborative group working across multiple products to deepen our understanding of defect formation and transport mechanisms, enabling better defect control and improved yields in our semiconductor process tools. The work we do together advances the world’s technology.

Requirements

  • PhD in Physics, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Strong academic record, with a preferred cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above on a 4.0 scale.
  • Knowledge of basic descriptive statistics and an interest in advanced statistical analysis.
  • Experience with data analysis and visualization tools such as Python, MATLAB, JMP, Excel, or similar software.
  • Experience with 2D/3D design software such as SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or similar CAD tools.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Hands-on experimental or laboratory research experience.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to present technical findings to diverse audiences.

Nice To Haves

  • Research or industry experience in semiconductor process development, plasma physics, vacuum systems, contamination control, or defect -related studies.
  • Knowledge of Design of Experiments (DOE), statistical analysis, and data-driven problem solving.
  • Experience working with large experimental datasets and developing data libraries, databases, or data management systems.
  • Experience with scientific programming and data analysis using Python, MATLAB, JMP, or similar tools.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct defect-related experiments, including tool preparation, interpreting designed experiment test plans, and shepherding wafers.
  • Design relatively simple 2D/3D structures for tool testing, as needed.
  • Analyze data from particle experiments using Python, MATLAB, Excel, JMP, and/or other analytical tools.
  • Present conclusions and recommendations to the team and larger organization through graphs, summaries, and technical presentations.
  • Contribute to the development of a defect library from a large volume of historical data, requiring strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Partner with scientists and engineers to define and execute effective designed experiments.
