About The Position

The Physician Office Nurse (LPN or RN) at the Jefferson Cary Cancer Center provides compassionate, patient-centered nursing care in a safe, efficient, and professional outpatient oncology setting. Working collaboratively with physicians, advanced practice providers, and the multidisciplinary cancer care team, this role serves as a patient advocate while coordinating care to promote positive patient outcomes and an exceptional patient experience. The Physician Office Nurse is responsible for supporting the daily clinical operations of the practice by triaging and responding to patient calls, coordinating communication between patients and providers, assisting with examinations and office-based procedures, administering treatments and medications as appropriate, and providing patient education. The nurse ensures timely, accurate, and confidential documentation while maintaining compliance with organizational policies, regulatory standards, and quality initiatives. This position plays a vital role in delivering high-quality oncology care by promoting patient safety, fostering effective communication, and ensuring efficient workflow throughout the Cancer Center. All duties are performed with an emphasis on compassion, accuracy, confidentiality, professionalism, and patient satisfaction.

Requirements

  • Maintains current Licensed Practical Nurse or Registered Nurse licensure for the State of Maine.
  • Maintain current BLS certification.

Responsibilities

  • Administers care according to established nursing standards and hospital policy.
  • Takes responsibility for assuring that safe patient care is maintained.
  • Demonstrates a systematic approach to care and treatment.
  • Supports multidisciplinary involvement in the plan of care.
  • Communicates effectively with physician and in a timely manner.
  • Obtains and document patient vital signs, pain level, smoking history and weight for review by physician.
  • Obtains a medication list from patients on each visit, updating the medication list in the Electronic Medical Record (EMR).
  • Provides Infusion Suite nurses with updated medication lists for mutual patients.
  • Educates patients and their family.
  • Processes lab work, office procedures, makes appointments for diagnostic or specialty testing, while educating patients about procedures and preparation for procedures.
  • Submits charges for procedures, medication administration, and lab collection as appropriate.
  • Prepares (to include stocking of medical supplies as needed) and cleans exam rooms for provider/patient needs.
  • Assesses all clinical calls with provider to determine acuity.
  • Maintains smooth flow in daily schedule between providers and patients.
  • Maintains EMR, ensure that results are appropriately scanned into system.
  • Upon provider orders, relays patient prescriptions to the pharmacist, follow-up on orders, notification of test results and closing the loop on orders in the EMR.
  • Maintains EPIC work queues for medication, imaging, and outside referrals.
  • Reviews and obtain necessary pre-authorization approval for patients.
  • Assures that informed consent is obtained prior to all procedures.
  • Participates in orientation of new staff.
  • Recognizes individual learning needs of coworkers and provide opportunities to their needs.
  • Responds appropriately to workload changes during the shift.
  • Actively participates in evaluating the quality of nursing care provided and patient care outcomes.
  • Recognizes own needs and take initiative to set measurable goals for professional growth and development.
  • Demonstrates responsibility and accountability.
  • Displays excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively communicate with coworkers, physicians, patients and their families.
  • Displays knowledge and use of aseptic techniques and infection control principles.
  • Displays ability to perform effectively in highly stressful situations.
  • Provides compassionate care to the hematology and oncology patient population.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Complies with local, state and federal laws and regulations.
