Requirements

  • Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) or Doctor of Osteopathy (D.O.).
  • Graduation from a medical school in the United States, Canada, or approved by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education of the American Medical Association (AMA), graduation from a college of osteopathy approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA), or graduation from a medical school with evidence of Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) certification.
  • Certifications issued by boards that are members of the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) or the AOA Bureau of Osteopathic Specialists.
  • Completion of an accredited residency approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).
  • Experience as required to meet clinical competency requirements specified in the credentialing instructions.
  • Current, full, active, and unrestricted license to practice medicine in the state of California.
  • Possess a current AHA OR ARC BLS Healthcare Provider certification.

Responsibilities

  • Perform a full range of physician services in accordance with privileges granted by the MTF.
  • Direct, perform, or assist in the instruction of other health care professionals within the scope of the clinical privileges or responsibilities.
  • Examine, diagnose, treat or prescribe courses of treatment within the scope of training, experience, and privileges.
  • Provide preventive and health maintenance care, including annual physicals, positive health behaviors, and self-care skills through education and counseling.
  • Order diagnostic tests as applicable as well as request consultation or referral with appropriate physicians, clinics, or other health resources as indicated.
  • Technically proficient in directing and teaching other medical staff, providing educational lectures and participating in the provision of in-service training to clinic staff members.
  • Provide full range of Internal Medicine services including, but not limited to, examination, diagnosis, prevention and treatment of adults, usually 18 years of age or older.
  • Oversee and provide general screening and medical care and examinations of patients for routine, acute and chronic conditions involving all organ systems, provide immunization prescriptions and diagnosis, treat, and counsel patients as indicated.
  • Participate in the Graduate Medical Education program.

  • Independently formulate full treatment plans based on sound evaluation and diagnoses consistent with current and/or evidence-based clinical practice guidelines.
  • Examine, diagnose and treat illness and diseases related to internal medicine of patients empaneled to the Clinic.
  • Provide a variety of professional medical services to authorized beneficiaries of the outpatient clinic.
  • Provide long-term comprehensive care managing both common and complex illnesses.
  • Provide some sub-specialty services within current granted privileges to patients encountered due to possible lack of consistent medical specialty support.
  • Apply new procedures in the evaluation and treatment of complex patient cases and perform emergency services or crisis intervention, including life-saving emergency procedures when necessary.
  • Examine and conduct thorough evaluation of presenting patients utilizing laboratory and clinical findings to appropriately treat or refer the patient to the appropriate specialty clinic.
  • Act as Primary Care Manager in the internal medicine clinic, incorporating an understanding of disease prevention, wellness, substance abuse, mental health, and common health problems.
  • Provide first contact, continuous, comprehensive primary care for adults according to current standards of care, the patient-centered medical home model of care, DHA policy, and relevant regulations.
  • Collaborate with specialists in other areas on cases with complex and multifaceted problems.
  • Render urgent treatment and hospitalize patients as required.
  • Manage problems in an outpatient clinic setting with a high level of diagnostic skill and ingenuity, independent judgment, and authoritative decisions as to courses of normal and/or emergency treatment procedures and need for referrals.
  • Thoroughly examine patients, study case history, and, as necessary, request laboratory tests and x-rays.
  • Request electrocardiograms and interpret when needed.
  • Prescribe care and treatment based on findings.
  • Administer or prescribe drugs and narcotics as needed.
  • Request return visits to the clinic as required to check patient progress, for receipt of immunizations and antibiotics, or for additional laboratory and clinical examinations and tests.
  • Serve as a specialist in General Internal Medicine to medical officers attending patients whose condition indicates a possible diagnosis of an internal medicine condition or whose condition presents difficulty in diagnosis or treatment.
  • Perform minor surgical procedures.
  • Provide expertise in specialty areas and thus provide consultant services to other clinic personnel within the context of the general ambulatory care provided by the primary care clinics.
  • Exercise independent judgment with full responsibility for professional diagnosis, treatment, referral, and disposition of patients.
  • Complete required records (both paper and electronic) pertaining to all medical services provided in accordance with specified procedures and regulations.
  • Properly safeguard all reports and records according to the Health Information Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) standards.
  • Maintain credentials in compliance with DHA standards and requirements.
  • Perform procedures for which credentialing has been delineated.
  • Perform administrative duties inherent to clinical activities.
  • Ensure the highest standards of professional practice and ethics are maintained.
  • Participate in continuing medical education.
  • Attend and participate in clinical and administrative staff meetings.
