Requirements

  • M.D. or D.O.; Completion of an accredited residency approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).
  • Minimum 2 years experience, within the past 3 years
  • Active, unrestricted license to practice medicine in any state
  • Possess and maintain board certification in Anesthesiology from either the American Board of Anesthesiology or the American Osteopathic Board of Anesthesiology.
  • BLS; other certifications may be required as part of the credentilaing process
  • Must be able to pass a Government background check and obtain a Government security clearance.

Responsibilities

  • Perform a full range of physician services in accordance with privileges granted by the MTF.
  • Direct, perform, or assist in the instruction of other health care professionals within the scope of the clinical privileges or responsibilities.
  • Examine, diagnose, treat or prescribe courses of treatment within the scope of training, experience, and privileges.
  • Provide preventive and health maintenance care, including annual physicals, positive health behaviors, and self-care skills through education and counseling.
  • Order diagnostic tests as applicable as well as request consultation or referral with appropriate physicians, clinics, or other health resources as indicated.
  • Technically proficient in directing and teaching other medical staff, providing educational lectures and participating in the provision of in-service training to clinic staff members. Such direction and interaction will adhere to Government and professional clinical standards and accepted clinical protocols.
  • Provide preoperative assessment, intra-operative and postoperative management of surgical patients or patients requiring procedures outside the operating room, e.g. MRI, CT, and Invasive Radiology.
  • Advocate for the patient in the operating room.
  • Evaluate the patient’s medical history, recent medications, and medical condition.
  • Inform the patient about the procedures associated with their surgery; discuss the anesthetic choices, their risks, and benefits.
  • Order laboratory tests and prescribe medication as appropriate.
  • Possess and maintain current competency in Electronic Health Record and Information Systems used at Naval Medical Center San Diego.
  • Attend the monthly Anesthesia Department meetings.
  • Participate in education of Residents, Student Nurse Anesthetists, medical students, and other trainees in the operating room, conferences, and didactic settings but is not responsible for their achievements.
