About The Position

We have a new opening for a full-time Physician - Flight Surgeon at the Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage, AK. This role involves performing a full range of physician services, providing technical direction and instruction to other healthcare professionals, and examining, diagnosing, treating, or prescribing courses of treatment. The position also includes providing preventive and health maintenance care, ordering diagnostic tests, requesting consultations, and technically supervising and teaching medical staff. The physician will apply current regulations including DAFMAN 48-123, DAFMAN 36-2905, DAFI 10-203, DoD 5210.42R, and Air Force Manual (AFMAN) 13-501. Healthcare will be provided to beneficiaries in the Flight Medicine Clinic, Occupational Health Clinic, or other civilian Flight Medicine physician positions. Responsibilities may include serving as a primary care manager, approving/disapproving subspecialty referrals, directing case management, answering patient telephone consults, admitting inpatients, and reviewing medical surveillance data. The role requires preparing records and reports, attending patient care conferences, and conducting special operational evaluations and determinations such as Physical Health Assessment and Mental Health Assessment for flyers/special duty personnel. Specific duties include performing initial certification exams, waivers, profiles, and adaptability rating assessments for military special duty applicants. Aeromedical dispositions can be made if qualifications are met and specifically listed on credentials and privileges, requiring approval from the Chief Aerospace Medicine (SGP). Medical, fitness, and profiling standards will be applied IAW AFI 48-123, AFI 36-2905, and AFI 10-203. Deployment health assessments will be completed IAW DHA policy. The physician shall not fly as part of their duties or participate in exercises beyond their medical care scope.

Requirements

Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) or Doctor of Osteopathy (D.O.).
Graduation from a medical school in the United States, Canada, or approved by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education of the American Medical Association (AMA), graduation from a college of osteopathy approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA), or graduation from a medical school with evidence of Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) certification.
Successful completion of an internship and residency program (corresponding to the specialty required in the TO) which has been approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) or the Committee on Postdoctoral Training of the American Osteopathic Association.
Subsequent to obtaining a Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathy degree, a candidate must have had at least 1 year of supervised experience providing direct service in a clinical setting (i.e., a 1-year internship or the first year of a residency program in a hospital or an institution accredited for such training).
Minimum of 35 hours of direct patient care in the past year.
Minimum of three years’ experience as a privileged flight surgeon at a US Military installation within the last seven years.
Current board certification in Aerospace Medicine. Depending on candidate's experience and residency, specific certification specialty (Aerospace Medicine) may be waived by the Chief of Flight Medicine.
The DoD only recognizes certifications issued by boards that are members of the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) or the AOA Bureau of Osteopathic Specialists.
Possess current American Heart Assoc or American Red Cross BLS and ACLS certifications.
Current, full, active, and unrestricted license to in a state, territory commonwealth or the Distric of Columbia.
Must possess ability to pass a Government background check/security clearance.

Specific certification specialty (Aerospace Medicine) may be waived by the Chief of Flight Medicine.

Responsibilities

Perform a full range of physician services in accordance with privileges granted by the facility.
Provide technical direction for, perform, or assist in the instruction of other health care professionals within the scope of the clinical privileges or responsibilities.
Examine, diagnose, treat or prescribe courses of treatment within the scope of training, experience, and privileges.
Provide preventive and health maintenance care, including annual physicals, positive health behaviors, and self-care skills through education and counseling.
Order diagnostic tests as applicable as well as request consultation or referral with appropriate physicians, clinics, or other health resources as indicated.
Technically proficient in providing clinical supervision and teaching other medical staff, providing educational lectures and participating in the provision of in-service training to clinic staff members.
Locate, interpret and apply current regulations to include: DAFMAN 48-123, DAFMAN 36-2905, DAFI 10-203, DoD 5210.42R, and Air Force Manual (AFMAN) 13-501.
Provide health care to beneficiaries assigned to the Flight Medicine Clinic, Occupational Health Clinic, or other civilian Flight Medicine physician positions as defined by the facility.
May perform as the primary care manager (PCM) for a panel of patients to include active-duty service members and their family members.
Approving/disapproving subspecialty referrals and directing case management activities.
Answering patient telephone consults with the assistance of clinic staff.
Admit all inpatients as per the local facility instructions.
Review, interpret, and act upon medical surveillance data relating to the Occupational Health program.
Prepare records and reports as required in support of services rendered in accordance with established procedures.
Attend and participate in patient care reports, review meetings, patient care conferences, team conferences, professional staff conferences and other appropriate professional activities only to the extent that such attendance and participation is relative to assigned cases and/or performance of services.
Conduct special operational evaluations and determinations, including (but not limited to): Physical Health Assessment, Mental Health Assessment for flyers/special duty personnel.
Perform initial certification exams for flying/special duty applicants, waivers, profiles (including foreign military personnel attending US military training, initial health screening for foreign military personnel attending US military training).
Conduct adaptability rating assessment for military special duty applicants.
Make Personal Reliability Program (PRP)/Presidential Support Program (PSP) determinations IAW DoD 5210.42R and AFMAN 10-3902.
Make aeromedical dispositions ONLY if the HCW meets the Qualifications criteria listed in AFI 48-123, Chapter 1, Section 1. Aeromedical dispositions must be specifically listed on the HCW’s credentials and privileges list and require initial review and approval by the facility's Chief Aerospace Medicine (SGP).
Apply medical, fitness and profiling standards IAW AFI 48-123, AFI 36-2905 and AFI 10-203 (including profiling and duty restrictions as Profile Officer).
Complete deployment health assessments IAW DHA policy.
