About The Position

The Assistant Professor of Clinical Practice will be in the Section of Hematology, Oncology, Bone Marrow Transplantation-Cellular Therapeutics (BMT-CT). This faculty position will focus primarily on the care of infants, children, adolescents and young adults in the Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders (CCBD) at Children's Hospital Colorado, Colorado Springs Hospital (COS). This position will be expected to independently manage and supervise the CCBD inpatient and outpatient services including the infusion center at the COS site. This position may also provide coverage of outpatient clinics periodically to CCBD South Campus (Highlands Ranch) site as needed based on clinical volumes and needs.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited Medical School.
  • Completion of an accredited ACGME Pediatric Hematology/Oncology fellowship.
  • At least 1-2 years of experience in General Pediatrics or Hematology, Oncology, Bone Marrow Transplantation – Cellular Therapeutics (BMT-CT).
  • Must successfully pass a drug test through Children’s Hospital Colorado
  • Must be willing and able to pass a national criminal background check
  • Continuous maintenance of Hospital Privileges, Continuing Medical Education, and Licenses and Certification requirements
  • Continuous compliance with all training and licensing requirements
  • Knowledge of pediatric Hematology/Oncology/BMT as a discipline.
  • Knowledge of infusion therapies for non-Hematology/Oncology/BMT diagnoses including such as rheumatology, gastroenterology, neurology, and other pediatric sub-specialties which use drugs that are common in the pediatric heme/onc patient population (immunoglobulin, antibody therapies, blood transfusions, chemotherapy agents, and similar).
  • Communicate effectively in written and spoken skills.
  • Ability to work independently in both the inpatient and outpatient settings of an academic medical center.
  • Independent patient care experience in the context of complex, tertiary, and higher care medical practice.
  • Independent proficiency in performing bone marrow aspirations and biopsies, lumbar punctures with or without intrathecal chemotherapy, Ommaya taps with or without instillation of chemotherapy, skin or small tissue biopsies and other minor procedures.
  • Comfort with managing infusion and medication reactions including allergic, transfusion, and anaphylactic reactions.
  • Ability to promote, focus on, and participate in mature, compassionate, and professional team dynamics, Patient Safety, Quality Care, Communication and Customer Service.
  • Ability to be comfortable with and promote a team-oriented approach with both patients and colleagues.

Nice To Haves

  • Two or more years in a pediatric Hematology, Oncology and/or BMT setting.
  • Experience with care coordination and/or management of other pediatric sub-specialties and complex pediatric disease management.
  • Experience in Clinical Research is desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Primary management of inpatient, outpatient, and infusion care of infants, children, and adolescents undergoing therapy for a variety of CCBD and non-CCBD related diagnoses, including emergency care and transfer/triage to higher level care as clinically indicated.
  • Provide education and support for rotating residents, fellows, PNP, PA, RN students, advanced practice providers (APPs), nursing, and other support staff.
  • Perform lumbar punctures including intrathecal chemotherapy administration if applicable, bone marrow aspirates, bone marrow biopsies, Ommaya taps and medication administration, skin biopsies, and other minor procedures as needed for treatment and therapy.
  • Communicate and collaborate with other faculty and referring providers regarding shared patients including timely consultations, response to communications, and coordination of care, as well as with other CCBD and non-CCBD faculty to communicate with primary care and other referring providers.
  • Share in call coverage (inpatient, holiday, weekend, and nights) with other CCBD faculty. This is estimated to be approximately every fourth week and approximately every fourth weekend at the Colorado Springs Hospital location.
