About The Position

The Physician Assistant will be responsible for providing primary care for all age groups. Duties include performing examinations, ordering and interpreting diagnostic and screening tests, prescribing and ordering medication as appropriate for patients’ medical conditions, and referring patients for further care as clinically appropriate. The PA will act as an agent of the supervising physician in ordering medical services and providing supervision to clinical staff. They will also be responsible for dictating test and examination results, obtaining complete medical history and physical data, synthesizing data to determine preliminary diagnosis and therapeutic plan, and interviewing and advising patients regarding health and illness prevention. Additionally, the PA will instruct patients and families regarding medications and treatment, triage patient phone calls, perform independent evaluations and treatment procedures in emergency situations, and provide monitoring and continuity of care between physician visits. The role requires maintaining strict patient confidentiality and adhering to HIPAA regulations, as well as CarolinaEast Health System’s “Standards of Excellence.”

Requirements

  • Must demonstrate successful completion of Baccalaureate Degree or a minimum of two years of college in an accredited PA Education Program and be certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA)
  • Maintain BLS/ACLS certifications
  • Must work under the supervision of an M.D
  • A copy of the PA’s Scope of Service must be on file at CIM and CarolinaEast Health System
  • In order to maintain physician assistant approval, documentation must be maintained by the physician assistant of 100 hours of CEHS for every two year period, at least 40 hours of which must be AMA Category 1 or equivalent CEHS
  • CEHS documentation must be available upon inspection by the North Carolina Medical Board or an agent of the Board upon request
  • Intent to Practice Acknowledgment from North Carolina Medical Board
  • Statement of Supervisor Arrangement

  • Copy of annual registration application and certificate
  • Proof of current licensure
  • Full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination
  • Require standing and walking for prolonged periods of time
  • Occasionally lift and carry items weighing up to 100 pounds
  • Require normal visual acuity and hearing
  • Require exposure to communicable disease and bodily fluids
  • Require working under stress in emergency situations or during irregular hours

Responsibilities

  • Providing primary care for all age groups
  • Referring patients with a high degree of medical complexity to physician for duration of patient’s care
  • Acting as agent of supervising physician in the ordering of diagnostic, therapeutic and other medical services
  • Providing supervision to clinical staff as an agent of the supervising physician
  • Prescribing medications under the rules and regulations set forth by the North Carolina Medical Board
  • Administering injections, immunizations and oral medication
  • Being familiar with indications, contraindications, adverse reactions and interactions of all medications prescribed
  • Documenting and dating all prescriptions in the patient’s record
  • Dictating tests and examination results in a timely and efficient manner
  • Requesting, receiving and signing for professional samples and distributing samples to patients
  • Obtaining complete medical history and physical data on patients
  • Reviewing patient records
  • Synthesizing data to determine preliminary diagnosis and therapeutic plan utilizing principles of prevention
  • Interviewing and advising patients regarding health and illness prevention
  • Instructing patient and family regarding medications and treatment instructions
  • Providing patient education
  • Triaging patient phone calls and providing consultation
  • Performing independent evaluations and treatment procedures in emergency situations
  • Providing monitoring and continuity of care between physician visits
  • Attending required meetings and participating in committees as requested
  • Participating in professional development activities and maintaining professional affiliations
  • Maintaining strictest patient confidentiality and adhering to HIPAA regulations
