About The Position

The University of Iowa Healthcare Walk-In Clinics is seeking a full-time (40 hours a week) Physician Assistant (PA) to primarily support their Iowa City/Corridor Walk-In Clinics (Urgent Care/QuickCare Clinics). The Physician Assistant will perform direct patient care, including diagnostic and therapeutic services, exercising autonomy in medical decision-making. They will also assist in educating healthcare students and potentially contribute to research endeavors. UI Walk-in Clinics provide care to save patients a trip to the emergency room, offering extended hours including evenings, weekends, and some holidays. These clinics handle a wide range of patients from newborn to geriatric and provide services like X-rays, IV fluids, and stitches. The position is in a dynamic, fast-paced environment with opportunities for learning and growth, utilizing a multidisciplinary approach to patient care. The role may support multiple clinics throughout the corridor area and potentially Quad Cities locations based on clinical needs. This position reports to the Medical Director within the UI Healthcare Walk In Clinics and Lead APP within UI Community Clinics.

Requirements

  • Licensed as PA in the state of Iowa.
  • Minimum of 6 months experience as a Physician Assistant.
  • Demonstrated experience in area of clinical practice is required.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively manage acutely ill patient population (of all ages) within a highly functioning unit/department.
  • Proved capacity to function with a high degree of autonomy while actively collaborating within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.
  • Demonstrated experience fostering a welcoming and respectful work environment.
  • Current valid driver’s license and the ability to meet the University Driving Policy Standards.
  • Availability to provide support at other clinical locations based on clinical hours/needs.
  • BLS, ACLS and PALS certification (obtained within first 6 months of employment).

Nice To Haves

  • Minimum 1 year of acute patient care PA experience within Emergency Department, Urgent Care and/or Walk-In Clinic area(s), or Family Medicine.
  • Some knowledge of University policies and procedures desired.
  • Previous EPIC experience.
  • Comfortable with technology and leveraging video, or the desire to learn.

Responsibilities

  • Provide medical care and management for patients, exercising autonomy in medical decision-making and services provided in the Walk-In Clinics, rotating to different Walk-in Clinics, and utilizing online telehealth platforms.
  • Obtain medical history and perform physical examination.
  • Assess, assist, diagnose and treat medical or surgical problems and record findings.
  • Perform or assist in and interpret the performance of laboratory and related studies.
  • Perform therapeutic procedures such as injections, immunizations, the suturing and care of wounds, removal of foreign bodies, ear and eye irrigation and other clinical procedures.
  • Assist in arranging for continued care such as but not limited to: transfer to the Emergency Treatment Center; follow-up care or establishment of care with a primary care provider; and/or follow-up consultations (including referrals to appropriate specialty and subspecialty physicians as indicated by patients’ problems).
  • Perform and screen results of special medical exams including but not limited to electrocardiogram, radiography, audiometric and vision screening, tonometry, and pulmonary function screening tests.
  • Instruct and counsel patients regarding physical and mental health on matters such as diets, disease, therapy, and normal growth and development.
  • Evaluate, treat, and institute procedures essential to providing an appropriate response to urgent medical problems.
  • Maintain awareness of health facilities, agencies, and resources in order to facilitate the appropriate referral of patients.
  • Order medications and administer drugs.
  • Direct other medical personnel and health professionals in the execution of patient care.
  • Perform duties appropriate to a physician’s practice.
  • Participate in educating health care students in various programs.
  • Participate in committees within the division, department, College of Medicine and University of Iowa Health Care.
  • Maintain effective working relationships with faculty, staff, students, and the public.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned on a permanent or temporary basis.
  • Meet or exceed customer service needs and expectations and provide excellent service in a direct or indirect manner.
  • Effectively transmit and interpret information through appropriate communication with internal and external customers.
