We are seeking a per diem Physician Assistant to support our Inpatient Orthopedics team. The departmental flat rate for this position is $86.00 per hour plus weekend, evening, overnight and holiday differentials. All per diem PAs are required to work a minimum of two shifts per month. Schedules are finalized several months in advance, allowing providers to select from a wide variety of shifts, including weekend days, evenings, nights, and holidays. Depending on availability, per diem can chose shifts range from 6 to 12 hours in duration. This position is based on the NWH Main Campus at 2014 Washington Street, Newton, MA 02462. In this role, Physician Assistants provide coverage on the inpatient orthopedic floor, and perform inpatient and ED orthopedic consults with the guidance of the full-time orthopedic PA and/or resident. Providers practice autonomously at the top of their licensure and are responsible for presenting and discussing patient evaluations with Attending Surgeons to develop appropriate treatment plans, ordering diagnostic tests and interpreting results, performing diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, conducting daily patient rounds, participating in discharge planning, educating and counseling patients and families, orienting medical students and physician assistant students, and surgical residents to the clinical environment, patient care practices, and hospital policies, and participating in quality improvement and quality assurance initiatives. The Physician Assistant (PA) is a licensed provider. The PA is responsible for the assessment and management of various populations of patients, medical and/or surgical, including diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, development of appropriate plans of care and ongoing evaluation.

Requirements

  • Master's Degree Physician Assistant required
  • Physician Assistant [State License] - Generic - HR Only required
  • Experience as a licensed Physician Assistant preferred

Responsibilities

  • Provides direct care, counseling, and teaching to a designated patient population in the ambulatory, inpatient, operative, and/or procedural setting.
  • Performs complete histories and physical examinations.
  • Orders, interprets, and evaluates appropriate laboratory and diagnostic tests.
  • Develops appropriate plans of care and follow-up based on the outcomes of diagnostic, laboratory, and physical examination findings.
  • Orders medications and writes prescriptions according to organizational and regulatory policies and procedures.
  • Consistently provides high quality and timely documentation including admission and progress notes, procedure notes, operative notes and discharge summaries.
  • Performs bedside procedures as are appropriate to the patient population.
  • Presenting and discussing patient evaluations with Attending Surgeons to develop appropriate treatment plans
  • Ordering diagnostic tests and interpreting results
  • Performing diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, including but not limited to: Wound care, Tube and drain insertion, care, and removal, Suturing and suture removal, Splint, brace, and cast application and removal, Medication administration (including IV push medications and steroid/anesthetic injections), Central venous line removal, Electrocardiograms
  • Conducting daily patient rounds
  • Participating in discharge planning
