Our hospital has an affiliation with Yale Cancer Center, the only National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated comprehensive cancer center in Connecticut and one of only 56 Centers in the nation. This collaboration between nationally and internationally renowned scientists and physicians from Yale Cancer Center, Yale School of Medicine and Smilow Cancer Hospital enables the best approaches for prevention, detection, diagnosis and treatment for cancer. Requirements

  • Graduate from an accredited Nurse Practitioner or an accredited Physician Assistant Program.
  • APRNs, PAs, CRNAs, and CNMs must be appointed to the Affiliated Medical Staff of a YNHHS hospital and go through the Medical Staff credentialing process.
  • Evidence of current competence to practice as an APRN, PA, CRNA, or CNM must be provided.
  • Active PA Certification by the National Commission of Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA), Connecticut State Physician Assistant License, ACLS/BLS Certified, when indicated for position profile DEA License.
  • Pediatric position profile PALS, when indicated for neonatal care NRP Certification.
  • Connecticut State Registered Nurse License, Connecticut State Nurse Practitioner License, Board specialty certification, as appropriate for position profile ACLS/BLS Certified, when indicated for position profile DEA License.

Nice To Haves

  • Clinical working experience as an NP/PA in the specialty/service line is preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Provides assessment, triage, and therapeutic management of patient and family needs throughout the disease process as an integral member of an interdisciplinary team.
  • Provides optimal patient care in inpatient, ambulatory, and outpatient settings, from diagnostic through prognostic management.
  • Works in collaboration with the attending supervising/collaborating physician(s) in accordance with state law, hospital regulations, hospital policy, protocols, and clinical pathways, and may provide autonomous, team-based care as appropriate.
  • Obtains medical histories, performs physical examinations, orders and reviews diagnostic and therapeutic tests and radiologic results, and formulates and manages patient treatment plans.
  • May perform procedures and prescribe treatments and medications in accordance with institutional and state guidelines and within specialty scope and professional competency standards.
  • May function as a first or second assistant on operative cases, when within position scope and educational and credentialing requirements are met, utilizing fine motor skills and manual dexterity.
  • Educates patients and families on care plans and recommended or available resources, including admitting instructions, treatment plans, actual and potential side effects of treatments and medications, and discharge planning.
  • Provides psychosocial support to patients, family members, and significant others in a caring, ethical, and professional manner.
  • Ensures appropriate documentation in accordance with hospital and regulatory requirements and protects patient information in all forms from unauthorized access, modification, destruction, or disclosure.
  • Demonstrates a high standard of moral and ethical behavior, professionalism, compassion, and commitment to patient care.
  • Ensures compliance with patient-related healthcare regulatory requirements, standards, and recommendations.
  • Continuously engages in activities and projects that maintain and advance professional competency.
  • Serves as a clinical resource for new house staff and may provide service-specific orientation related to clinical education.
  • Consistently demonstrates high-reliability organizational behaviors, including reporting safety events and near misses.
  • Maintains all employee requirements as determined by hospital policy.
  • May serve as a clinical preceptor for NP/PA students and other healthcare professionals and may mentor pre-PA/NP candidates.
  • May collaborate on research, quality assurance, and performance improvement initiatives and assist in the development of protocols that support clinical practice and professional growth.
