About The Position

Hartford HealthCare is seeking an experienced Physician Assistant or Advanced Practice Registered Nurse to join their team in an innovative Emergency Medicine and Surgical Services hybrid nocturnist role. This unique position provides an opportunity for an APP to practice across two complementary clinical settings overnight—evaluating lower-acuity Emergency Department patients while providing overnight admission and clinical support for the surgical service. This role is ideal for an experienced APP who enjoys a diverse clinical practice, values autonomy, and is looking for an opportunity to become an integral part of both the Emergency Department and surgical teams. The APP Nocturnist will serve as an important clinical resource during overnight hours, helping provide timely care to both Emergency Department and surgical patients. This innovative model allows the hospital to provide consistent overnight APP coverage across two high-demand clinical areas, improving access, efficiency, and continuity of care. This is an opportunity to practice in a high-functioning Emergency Department while developing a unique cross-specialty practice. You will work alongside experienced Emergency Medicine physicians, surgeons, nurses, and APPs in a collaborative environment with the resources of a large integrated healthcare system.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited PA or APRN program
  • Current Connecticut licensure
  • Appropriate national certification
  • Emergency Medicine, Urgent Care, Hospital Medicine, Surgery, or related acute-care experience
  • Strong clinical judgment and communication skills
  • Ability to work independently while recognizing when physician or surgical consultation is necessary
  • Comfortable working overnight in a fast-paced clinical environment

Nice To Haves

  • Experienced PA or APRN with strong clinical skills and an interest in both Emergency Medicine and surgical care.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate and manage appropriate lower-acuity Emergency Department patients, including: Comprehensive history and physical examinations, Diagnostic evaluation and interpretation, Treatment and management of common emergency conditions, Minor procedures within the APP's scope of practice, Reassessment and disposition of patients, Appropriate consultation and escalation of care.
  • Provide overnight surgical admission coverage.
  • Complete surgical admission histories, physical examinations, orders, and initial management.
  • Evaluate surgical patients and respond to overnight clinical concerns.
  • Close collaboration with the on-call surgeon and Emergency Medicine physician.
  • Provide support to the surgical service, including: Evaluation of patients requiring surgical admission, Completion of admission histories and physical examinations, Admission orders and initial treatment plans, Evaluation of postoperative and surgical patients with acute clinical concerns, Coordination with the on-call surgeon, Management of appropriate overnight surgical issues, Recognition and escalation of patients requiring urgent surgical intervention.
