About The Position

University Medical Center New Orleans is seeking a Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner to join our Neuroscience Center, supporting patients with Multiple Sclerosis and other neurologic conditions in an outpatient setting. This is an excellent opportunity to work collaboratively within a specialized neurology practice focused on high-quality, patient-centered care. The Physician Assistant / Nurse Practitioner (Outpatient) is responsible for providing comprehensive medical care and treatment to patients under the supervision of a physician. This role includes performing physical examinations, implementing preventive health measures, developing treatment plans, and evaluating patient responses to medical and nursing interventions in accordance with established guidelines.

Requirements

  • Master’s Degree from an approved Nurse Practitioner program, or Completion of an accredited Physician Assistant Program (MS-PAS)
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) – American Heart Association
  • RN License – Louisiana State Board of Nursing (NP candidates)
  • Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) – Louisiana State Board of Nursing or Physician Assistant License – Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiners
  • NCCPA Certification (Physician Assistant candidates)
  • Strong clinical and medical assessment skills
  • Proficiency with computer systems and electronic medical records
  • Working knowledge of ICD-10 and CPT-4 coding
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and guest relations skills

Nice To Haves

  • Prior Neurology experience is preferred

Responsibilities

  • Provide high-quality, patient-centered care in an outpatient neurology setting
  • Perform assessments, physical examinations, and preventive health measures
  • Respond promptly to patient calls and messages, ensuring same-day completion
  • Document encounters accurately and maintain complete patient and business records
  • Identify and report suspected abuse or neglect in accordance with policy
  • Recognize medical emergencies and respond appropriately per organizational procedures
  • Coordinate and periodically review plans of care to ensure continuous quality improvement
  • Maintain compliance with all applicable federal, state, and regulatory requirements
  • Ensure confidentiality of patient information in accordance with HIPAA standards
  • Maintain required continuing education to ensure ongoing clinical competence
  • Demonstrate professional accountability and commitment to guest relations and core values
  • Provide leadership and support to clinical staff
  • Communicate effectively with clinic leadership, escalate issues as needed, and propose solutions
  • Support compliance with safety, environmental, infection control, and quality standards
  • Implement standard and transmission-based precautions per policy
  • Perform hand hygiene and maintain a clean, safe clinical environment
  • Report safety hazards or concerns to clinic leadership
  • Participate in hiring, disciplinary, and termination decisions for clinical staff as appropriate
  • Attend daily huddles, staff meetings, and provider meetings
  • Engage in continuous performance improvement initiatives
