About The Position

We are seeking a Physician Assistant (PA) or Nurse Practitioner (NP) to join our clinician group, with a split focus between family medicine and orthopedics. Our team includes two Family Physicians, ten advanced practice clinicians, and a behavioral health team. We also collaborate with over 25 specialists offering outreach services and more than ten telemedicine specialty clinicians. Our network extends to clinics in Postville, IA, and Fayette, IA. West Union is a rural community in NE Iowa, designated as a Green Main Street community, offering abundant outdoor recreational opportunities, a strong school system, and a vibrant community. The population base for West Union and surrounding rural communities is approximately 21,000. A state-of-the-art, completely remodeled, full-service hospital is attached to the clinic. Emplify Health by Gundersen is a physician-led, not-for-profit healthcare system serving 22 counties across western Wisconsin, northeastern Iowa, and southeastern Minnesota. We are a regional referral center and a teaching hospital with 325 beds, a Level II Trauma and Emergency Center, and the designated Western Academic Campus for the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine & Public Health. Requirements

  • An Iowa license and completion of an accredited Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner program is required to start.
  • Graduate of an accredited physician assistant program.
  • NCCPA (National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants) certified or eligible.
  • Licensed or eligible for licensure by the Medical Examining Board(s) of the state(s) in which the PA functions.
  • Must be able to apply diverse principles of logic, medical or scientific thinking to a wide range of health care situations.
  • Ability to apply accepted methods of treatment and creative new developments to health care problems.
  • Completion of an annual skills evaluation is required of this position to demonstrate competency to perform the PA-C role.
  • Maintains Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Follows HIPAA guidelines and reports confidentiality breeches.

Responsibilities

  • Cares for patients of any age to obtain a personal medical history, perform an appropriate physical examination, record and present pertinent data concerning the patient in a manner meaningful to the supervising physician.
  • Performs and assists in performing routine diagnostic studies and therapeutic procedures.
  • Facilitates referrals to community health facilities, agencies and resources.
  • Provides patient services in outpatient facilities, hospitals, nursing homes, extended care facilities, and patient homes as required.
  • Instructs and counsels patients on physical and mental health, including diet, disease, medications, treatment, growth and development, screening and disease prevention.
  • Recognizes medical emergencies and initiates evaluative and treatment procedures necessary in life-threatening situations, and immediately reports to the supervising physician.
  • Prepares and maintains clinical records in a problem-oriented format, fostering communication between healthcare providers and continuity of care and coordination of services.
  • Assists the practice physician in quality improvement efforts by participating in quality improvement teams, maintaining necessary logs, preparing reports, and participating in practice evaluation and education programs.
  • Maintains Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Maintains knowledge of current statutes regulating physician assistant clinical activity and provides services within the limitations as established by the state licensure boards, local and federal regulations.
  • Consults with the physicians, nursing staff, and technicians in order to evaluate standards of patient care provided and makes recommendations for improvement.
  • Participates in the annual performance review process by completing a self-evaluation, assisting the general supervising physician in updating job description and scope of activity, establishing a personal improvement plan, and meeting with the general supervising physician and administrative director to review progress and establish future goals.
  • Undertakes other additional primary care job-related duties as requested.
  • Supports Gundersen Palmer Lutheran Hospital and Clinics' mission statement, values and goals of service by demonstrating concern for quality, efficiency, and effectiveness of operations, services, activities and personnel.
  • Prepares and submits accurate billing and insurance claim information reflecting the services provided, in compliance with the standard E & M coding guidelines, federal and state regulations, insurance contract terms, and Gundersen Palmer Lutheran's policy and procedures.
