The Physician Assistant (PA) is a licensed provider responsible for the assessment and management of various populations of patients, medical and/or surgical, including diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, development of appropriate plans of care and ongoing evaluation. The Neurosurgery PA will participate in patient care as an outpatient or inpatient member of the Neurosurgery team for the Department of Neurosurgery. This role involves rounding with the neurosurgical team, performing inpatient and emergency room consultations and follow-up, managing patient concerns, seeing patients in clinic or virtually for post-op, established or new visits, and collecting clinical data for studies. The PA will also perform procedures such as staple/suture removal/placement, wound care, lumbar drain placement/removal, lumbar punctures, NGT placement, central line placement, arterial line placement, spine brace/cervical collar placement and removal, draping, and patient positioning. The PA will serve as first-call for ED and inpatient consultations, appropriately triaging and calling the neurosurgeon on-call as needed. The PA may also serve as an OR first assist with a neurosurgeon. While the PA can expect a relatively predictable work schedule, variations may occur to cover clinical needs, and the PA may be asked to pick up additional shifts, work variable hours including night shifts, and provide backup coverage as needed. The PA I shall be capable of independently orienting, onboarding, and/or training new hire PAs and shall be actively involved in ongoing quality improvement and patient safety initiatives.
