About The Position

The Neurocritical Care PA I will participate in patient care as part of the neurocritical care team caring for neurology and neurosurgery patients in the Neurosciences ICU. The physician assistant (PA) is a licensed provider who has acquired a broad range of knowledge and skills through the successful completion of a physician assistant program. The PA is responsible for the assessment and management of various populations of patients, medical and/or surgical, including diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, development of appropriate plans of care and ongoing evaluation. The physician assistant works under the supervision of an attending physician and reports directly to the department administrator or chief physician assistant administratively. The PA will perform in accordance with all state and federal regulations and institutional policies including but not limited to the BWH PA Scope of Practice, Prescriptive Guidelines, approved clinical privileges, and BWH PA policy.

Requirements

  • Master's Degree Physician Assistant required
  • Physician Assistant [State License] - MA PA required
  • Experience as a licensed Physician Assistant preferred
  • Skilled in taking medical histories to assess medical condition and interpret findings.
  • Ability to maintain quality control standards.
  • Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
  • Ability to interpret, adapt and apply guidelines and procedures.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and establish/maintain effective working relationships with patients, medical staff and the public.
  • Maintains ACLS certification.

Nice To Haves

  • Two years of PA experience strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Rounding with critical care team composed of attending physicians, fellows, residents, and APPs
  • Obtaining patient histories, performing comprehensive physical examinations, coordinating tests and consultations, implementing treatment plans, communicating with patients and families
  • Performing inpatient consultation and follow-up
  • Performing procedures that may include, but are not limited to: Staple/suture removal/placement, Wound care/packing, Lumbar punctures, NGT placement, Central line placement, Arterial line placement, Lumbar drain placement/removal, Spine braces/cervical collar placement and removal
  • Providing direct care, counseling, and teaching to a designated patient population in the ambulatory, inpatient, operative, and/or procedural setting
  • Performing complete histories and physical examinations
  • Ordering, interpreting, and evaluating appropriate laboratory and diagnostic tests
  • Developing appropriate plans of care and follow-up based on the outcomes of diagnostic, laboratory, and physical examination findings
  • Ordering medications and writing prescriptions according to organizational and regulatory policies and procedures
  • Consistently providing high quality and timely documentation including admission and progress notes, procedure notes, operative notes and discharge summaries
  • Performing bedside procedures as are appropriate to the patient population, including lumbar puncture
  • In some settings, the PA may first assist in the operating room or procedural areas
  • Practicing cost effective medicine in an efficient manner, maximizing available resources
  • Discussing patient data with other physicians and professionals as appropriate in a multidisciplinary setting
  • Demonstrating expert clinical judgment skills to function in an independent role
  • Participating in selected local and national organizational committees, councils, and initiatives
  • Independently orienting, onboarding, and/or training new hire PAs and/or PA students within the department/division
  • Actively involved in ongoing quality improvement and patient safety initiatives
