About The Position

Fairview Southdale Hospital seeks a Physician Assistant to join their Hospitalist Program on a casual, as-needed basis. This role can function as either a House Provider or a Hospitalist. The House Advanced Practice Provider (APP) provides immediate medical care to inpatients, outpatients utilizing hospital outpatient services, and on-site hospital visitors for urgent and emergency situations 24/7. While on-site hospitalist physicians are available for backup, the role is largely autonomous. The Hospitalist APP's responsibilities include being part of the admitting team, managing observation patients, and rounding. Fairview Southdale Hospital benefits from strong ancillary support from dedicated RNs, RN Care Coordinators, Social Workers, and Pharmacists. The medical staff comprises multiple specialty and subspecialty services that collaborate to deliver comprehensive patient care.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant program
  • BC/BE through NCCPA
  • Licensed or ability to obtain a PA license with prescriptive authority through the Minnesota Board of Medical Practice
  • Ability to obtain and/or maintain DEA certification for the State of Minnesota
  • Meet threshold criteria/qualifications for Credentialing and Privileges

Nice To Haves

  • Prefer 2 years or more of hospital-based experience in ICU, hospitalist or emergency setting.
  • 2-3 month training period for inexperienced APPs that would go through ICU, hospitalist, ED, OR, and house physician rotations, in addition to some didactic work.

Responsibilities

  • Provides in-hospital medical staff coverage at specified hours as scheduled.
  • Provides face-to-face evaluations of in-hospital patients requiring restraint and seclusion.
  • Responds and leads all rapid response team calls (examples: altered mental status, chest pain evaluation, respiratory distress, cardiac/resp arrest, etc.).
  • Responds to, evaluates and treats in-hospital medical/surgical emergencies and/or inpatient related problems including patient injuries.
  • Provide preliminary interpretation of xrays and/or labs included in emergency work up.
  • Participates in disaster emergencies, real and/or practice.
  • See patients exclusively in hospital setting.
  • Provide day and evening inpatient coverage on a rotating basis.
  • Responsibility of admissions, assisting with cross coverage, as well as coverage of Observation Unit which is managed by Hospitalist group.
