About The Position

The Physician Assistant, Cardiac Surgery will make daily rounds independently or with the surgical team on patients post cardiac surgery and report findings to the attending surgeon. This role manages and implements care plans as directed by the attending surgeon and autonomously. The Physician Assistant will direct and oversee other members of the surgical care team to facilitate pre and post-operative cardiac surgical care. Responsibilities include managing hemodynamics along with vasoactive medications, post-operative drain management and removal, chest tube insertion, and intra-aortic balloon pump knowledge and management. There is emphasis on post-operative wound management and procedures for critically ill cardiac surgery patients, including insertion of central lines and thoracentesis. The role involves maintaining patient care with ongoing re-assessments, writing orders, interpreting tests and imaging, and obtaining consultations. The Physician Assistant provides a continuum of care from pre-operative care through critical care to discharge planning, and is responsible for daily progress notes, history and physical consult notes, and discharge summaries. This position educates and assists other members of the surgical team in patient care. The advance practice provider is a leadership position demonstrating the ability to oversee a patient’s care plan and work autonomously. The role requires attendance at surgical staff meetings, grand rounds, and morbidity and mortality conferences. Continuous learning is expected through internal and external educational meetings and staying current with professional literature. The role involves working rotating days, nights, and weekends, and performing other work-related duties as requested. Requirements

Master's Degree
Current BLS
Current ACLS
Must be a graduate of a graduate level program approved by the AMA Board of Approval and Certification of PA Programs
Active certification from NCCPA; National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants
US Department of Justice and Massachusetts’ Controlled Substance DEA Registrations are required for prescribing practitioners

Responsibilities

Maintains patient care with ongoing re-assessments to evaluate changes in patient status, writes orders, interprets tests and imaging, and obtains consultations when needed.
Provides a continuum of care from pre-operative care through critical care to discharge planning.
Responsible for daily progress notes, history and physical consult notes and discharge summaries.
Educates and assists other members of the surgical team in the care and progress of the patient’s pre and post-operative course.
Demonstrates the ability to oversee a patient’s care plan and work autonomously and direct other members of the care team as directed by the attending surgeon.
Attends surgical staff meeting, grand rounds, morbidity and mortality conference.
Maintains and enhances skill and clinical knowledge with clinical competence; providers are expected to attend internal and external educational meetings and keep current with appropriate professional journals/literature.
Performs other work-related duties as requested/directed.
