Requirements

One (1) plus years of experience as Physician Assistant (PA-C), preferably in cardiothoracic surgery.
Two (2) plus years of experience managing cardiothoracic surgery patients or cardiac patients preferred.
ICU experience required.
Working knowledge of managing device patients preferred.
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited Physician Assistant Program.
CA Physician Assistant License.
National Commission Certification of PAs (NCCPA).
National Provider Identification (NPI).
Current DEA license (schedule 2-5).
Current Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support certification.

Nice To Haves

Preferably in cardiothoracic surgery.
Two (2) plus years of experience managing cardiothoracic surgery patients or cardiac patients.
Working knowledge of managing device patients.

Responsibilities

Provide pre-op and post-op assessments of patients under the direct supervision of a Supervising Physician.
Provide and/or assist in follow-up care for patients in the Cardiac Surgery ICU.
Supervise care for patients in the Cardiac Surgery ICU, including those with conditions such as CABG, valve replacement/repairs, VADs, Heart and Lung transplants, ECMO, aortic dissections, and aneurysm repairs.
Perform bedside procedures within the scope of service.
Write progress notes, participate in daily rounds, and write orders.
Dictate discharge notes.
Participate in hospital-wide quality improvement initiatives.
Collaborate with multidisciplinary team members to ensure continuity of care.
Promote and maintain patient health by providing medical services.
Assess patient health by interviewing patients, performing physical examinations, and obtaining/updating medical histories.
Analyze and organize the care of clinically complex patients, including socio-cultural, cognitive, functional, nutritional, and educational evaluations.
Act as a patient advocate, serving as a liaison between the patient, family, Supervising Physician, and insurance companies.
Update doctors and keep patients informed of changes in care plan and patient status.
Ensure the hospital stay is a positive experience by being accessible to answer questions and concerns promptly.
Refer to case management and other healthcare providers as necessary.
Effectively assess and manage patient/family psychosocial issues.
Implement and direct patient management plans in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team.
Utilize appropriate evidence-based and diagnostic tools coupled with therapeutic modalities.
Dictate clear and concise history and physicals, follow-ups, patient interactions, discharge summaries, and letters.
Coordinate MD referrals to various departments.
Ensure baseline assessments on ICU and non-monitored bed patients to prevent postoperative complications.
Perform appropriate diagnostic and therapeutic procedures within the scope of practice.
Communicate and guide staff in structuring/relaying patient information clearly and precisely.
Utilize SBAR, read back for telephone orders or critical test results, and avoid unauthorized abbreviations.
Assist service line manager/director with recruitment by participating in interviews and providing orientation to new PAs.
Provide mentoring and guidance to new PAs, students, and volunteers.
Provide educational in-services to co-workers.
Provide emergency resuscitation as indicated, maintaining BLS and ACLS certification.
Identify patients at risk for cardiac/respiratory compromise early and make transfer arrangements.
Maintain certification by appropriate organizations and comply with CSMC and departmental requirements.
Remain in good standing with the Medical Staff.
Perform other duties as determined collaboratively by Supervising Physicians within the scope of practice and institutional policies.
