About The Position

The Bariatric Surgery APP provides comprehensive care across the surgical continuum, including operating room assistance, inpatient management, and outpatient services for bariatric and select general surgery patients. This is a full-time position located at Rochester General Hospital in the Bariatric Surgery Department. The schedule involves four 10-hour shifts (7:00 AM – 5:00 PM) with one weekday off, and rotating weekend and holiday call (1 in 5 weekends; 1–2 holidays per year). The ideal candidate is compassionate, patient-focused, possesses critical thinking skills, decisive judgment, and the ability to work with minimal supervision. Exceptional documentation skills, professional behavior, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment are also required.

Requirements

  • BS: Physician Assistant (Required)
  • PA-C - Certified Physician Assistant - National Committee on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA)
  • RPA - Registered Physician Assistant - New York State Education Department (NYSED)

Responsibilities

  • Provides care across inpatient and outpatient settings, including pre-operative education, post-operative follow-up, and ongoing support for bariatric patients.
  • Prescribes medication, writes orders, performs procedures and responds to emergency and/or immediate condition changes of acute, critically ill patients.
  • Manages ambulatory responsibilities including patient calls, electronic messages (e.g., MyCare), and prescription refills.
  • Obtains complete, detailed and accurate patient histories, reviews patient records, performs physical exams, and records all pertinent data to develop comprehensive medical status, diagnosis and clinical treatment plan for all assigned patients.
  • Assists in the operating room for bariatric procedures including gastric sleeve, gastric bypass, revisions, and duodenal switch, as well as select general surgery cases.
  • Assists surgeons with endoscopic procedures.
  • Provides inpatient care including post-operative management, consults, rounding, and discharges.
  • Conducts office visits including pre-operative evaluations, post-operative follow-ups, problem-focused visits, lab reviews, and scope follow-ups.
  • Participates in a 1:5 weekend call rotation and rotating holiday coverage, including managing answering service calls, addressing consults, and rounding on hospitalized patients as needed.
  • Works collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team including four bariatric surgery APPs, one office-based/medical weight loss APP, and three bariatric surgeons.
