About The Position

The Surgeon is responsible for providing medical, surgical treatment, and follow-up for patients treated with severe and life-threatening traumatic injuries, critical illness, or emergency general surgery conditions. The Surgeon will collaborate with providers in other specialties as needed to stabilize and treat patients, assessing and managing patients following established standards and practices. The role involves varied shift work in the hospital and clinics, totaling 156 shifts per year for full-time employees. This includes day shifts as a Trauma Surgeon, Surgical ICU, and Emergency General Surgeon, as well as night shifts covering Trauma, ICU, or emergency general surgery. The work location is St. Charles Bend, Trauma & Acute Care Surgery Clinic.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited medical school.
  • Successful completion of an accredited residency program in General Surgery.
  • Successful completion of additional educational programs necessary to enable Physician to acquire and maintain privileges to perform the range of services contemplated.
  • Board eligibility/certification in the specialty being practiced.
  • Complete annual fire/safety, etc. education in-services as required.
  • Attend mandatory educational offerings as described in SCHS policies/procedures and/or as required by other regulatory bodies.
  • Complete annual CME as required to maintain license and appropriate Board certification.
  • Complete in a timely manner assigned Computer Based Learning modules.
  • Current license as MD / DO.
  • Board certified or eligible in General Surgery.
  • Those applicants who are not board certified at the time of application, but who have completed their residency or fellowship training are required to become board certified within seven (7) years of residency or fellowship training.
  • Unrestricted Federal DEA number.
  • Unrestricted ability to participate in Medicare / Medicaid, or other federal or state governmental health care programs.
  • Valid driver’s license and the ability to meet SCHS driving requirements.
  • Current BLS certification.
  • Current ACLS and ATLS certification.
  • Additional certifications may be required based on privileges granted to provider by Medical Staff Services at SCHS Inpatient locations.
  • Experience using EMR (Electronic Medical Records) software.
  • Experience working in a team environment and proven ability to collaborate, manage facilitation and consensus building among health care professionals and agencies to achieve expected results.
  • Must be able to wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) required to perform the job safely.
  • Must have excellent communication skills and ability to interact with a diverse population and professionally represent SCHS.
  • Strong team working and collaborative skills.
  • Ability to multi-task and work independently.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Excellent organizational skills, written and oral communication and customer service skills, particularly in dealing with stressful personal interactions.
  • Intermediate to advanced proficiency with Electronic Medical Record systems.
  • Intermediate in Microsoft applications (Word, Excel).

  • Fellowship training and board certification in Surgical Critical Care.
  • Current unrestricted Oregon Medical License.
  • Epic EMR software experience.

Responsibilities

  • Examines, diagnoses, and surgically treats critically injured patients and patients with emergency general surgery conditions.
  • Performs patient examinations, obtains and records pertinent medical history, subjective, and objective findings.
  • Orders and interprets appropriate laboratory, imaging, and other diagnostic procedures.
  • Interprets and integrates data to determine diagnosis and therapeutic plan.
  • Administers and prescribes medications in compliance with state law and practice guidelines.
  • Orders and performs appropriate medical and surgical procedures in accordance with State law and practice guidelines.
  • Instructs patient and family regarding medications and treatments.
  • Educates patients regarding health, illness and injury prevention, and healing.
  • Recommends community resources to meet patient and family needs.
  • Maintains and reviews patient records, charts, and other pertinent information, documenting clearly and concisely.
  • Triages patient telephone calls, providing consultation as needed.
  • Communicates effectively with colleagues, patients, physicians, and administration.
  • Maintains quality of clinical practice by selecting appropriate avenues for professional growth.
  • Maintains CME requirements and certifications per trauma center and State requirements.
  • Participates in and supports quality and performance improvement activities; identifies areas and functions where patients, staff, and physicians need information.
  • Acts as a leader and supports departmental goals and the vision, mission and values of the St. Charles Health System in all respects.
  • Remains familiar with the organization structure, communications systems and billing process, completing billing and coding documentation within time assigned.
  • Keeps all licenses and appropriate certifications current and unrestricted to maintain privileges at a St. Charles Health System hospital sufficient to permit performance of job duties.
  • Participates in provider meetings and assists in policy formation for SCHS and provider practice.
  • Participates in administrative activities of the trauma service as required by Oregon statutes.
  • Increases understanding and collaboration throughout the medical community.
  • Maintains compliance with hospital’s Medical Staff Bylaws, Rules, and Regulations, as required by SCHS Board of Directors.
  • Provides customer service in a manner that promotes goodwill, is timely, efficient and accurate.
