The Women's Health residency is designed to provide practicing therapists with advanced training in examination, clinical decision-making, and manual therapy techniques. The program runs for 16 consecutive months (beginning in August). Additionally, the program places an emphasis upon utilizing research and literature to maintain practice within the scope of evidence-based physical therapy. The program is funded by the UPMC Rehabilitation Institute, housed within several outpatient clinics. The program has been designed to advance the competent physical therapist through education, research and professional service into a board-certified clinical specialist in the area of women’s/ pelvic health physical therapy. As part of the “Continuing Education” Plan of Study, the resident will participate in a planned curriculum specific to the Women’s Health Residency Program including: pelvic floor, antepartum/ postpartum, lymphedema, biofeedback, GI dysfunction, oncology, bone health, RED-S, and Caring for the LGBTQIA+ Patient. The resident will concurrently be enrolled in part of the Advanced Clinical Practice – Musculoskeletal Sequence, sponsored by the UPMC Rehabilitation Institute. These courses are designed to promote advanced clinical decision making and manual therapy skills related to the evaluation and treatment of musculoskeletal disorders, including: foot/ankle, knee, hip, shoulder, elbow, sacroiliac joint, cervical, lumbar, and thoracic spine.
