About The Position

The Physical Therapy Oncology Residency Program at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK) is an 18-month intensive program designed for practicing physical therapists. It provides post-professional didactic and clinical training to develop advanced clinical skills and knowledge in treating individuals with oncologic diagnoses across the continuum of care. The program aims to prepare residents to apply advanced knowledge, clinical skills, evidence-based practice, and critical inquiry in the evaluation and treatment of individuals with cancer in both acute care and outpatient settings. Upon successful completion, residents will demonstrate specialist-level knowledge and clinical skills in oncologic physical therapy, advanced skills in critical inquiry and evidence-based practice, serve as consultants within multidisciplinary teams, and effectively deliver educational material to various audiences.

Requirements

  • Graduated from an accredited program in physical therapy or equivalent through the Federations of State Boards of Physical Therapy by the start of the residency program
  • 1 - 5 years of clinical experience preferred
  • New York State Physical Therapy Licensure required by the start of the residency program
  • Membership in APTA, including Oncology Academy
  • BCLS Certification

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate specialist level knowledge in oncologic physical therapy in a range of conditions and practice settings.
  • Demonstrate specialist level clinical skills in treating patients across all phases of the oncologic continuum of care including pre-treatment, active care, post-care and palliation.
  • Demonstrate advanced skills in critical inquiry and evidence-based practice to effectively and efficiently optimize patient care.
  • Serve as a consultant within a multidisciplinary team in both an acute care and outpatient setting demonstrating strong communication, collaboration, and specialist level clinical expertise.
  • Effectively deliver educational material to patients, family/caregivers, peers, interdisciplinary colleagues, and physical therapy students to advance knowledge related to oncology physical therapy practice.
