The physical therapy assistant provides physical therapy services under the direction of the physical therapist and according to the physician's plan of care (or other authorized licensed independent practitioner) plan of care. The role involves direct patient care, including treating patients to relieve pain, develop or restore function, and maintain maximum performance. This includes directing and aiding patients in therapeutic exercises, utilizing physical agents, and instructing patients on the use of assistive devices. Communication and record-keeping are also key aspects, requiring observation and reporting of patient reactions and conditions to the physical therapist and maintaining clinical notes. Participation in team meetings and in-service education programs is expected.
