The physical therapy assistant provides physical therapy services under the direction of the physical therapist and according to the physician's plan of care (or other authorized licensed independent practitioner) plan of care. The role involves providing direct physical therapy, treating patients to relieve pain, develop or restore function, and maintain maximum performance. This includes directing and aiding patients in therapeutic exercises, muscle reeducation, gait and functional training, transfer activities, and prosthetic training. The assistant also utilizes various physical agents and instructs patients on the use of assistive devices.
