About The Position

Assesses, plans, organizes, and participates in rehabilitative programs that improve mobility, relieve pain, increase strength, and decrease or prevent deformity of patients suffering from disease or injury.

Requirements

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Knowledge of word processing software, spreadsheet software, internet software, electronic medical record software, and database software.
  • Doctorate of Physical Therapy (DPT) or equivalent; and equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • New York State Physical Therapy License
  • CPR certification
  • Regularly required to stand, walk, use hands, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, and talk or hear.
  • Frequently required to climb or balance.
  • Occasionally required to sit.
  • Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, ability to adjust focus, and ability to see color.

Responsibilities

  • Plans, prepares, and carries out individually designed programs of physical treatment to maintain, improve or restore physical functioning in, or alleviate pain and prevent physical dysfunction in patients.
  • Performs and documents and initial exam, evaluating data to identify problems and determine a diagnosis prior to intervention.
  • Evaluates effects of treatment at various stages and adjust treatments to achieve maximum benefits.
  • Administers manual exercises, massage, or traction to help relieve pain, increase patient strength, or decrease or prevent deformity and crippling.
  • Instructs patient and family in treatment procedures to be continued at home.
  • Confers with the patient, medical practitioners, and appropriate others to plan, implement, and assess the intervention.
  • Reviews physician's referral and patient's medical records to help determine diagnosis and physical therapy treatments.
  • Records prognosis, treatment, response, and progress in the patient's chart or enter information into the computer.
  • Obtains the patient's informed consent to proposed treatment.
  • Discharges patient from physical therapy when goals or projected outcomes have been attained and provide follow-up care.
  • Tests and measures patient's strength, motor development and function, sensory perception, functional capacity, and respiratory and circulatory efficiency and records findings.
  • Identifies and documents goals, anticipated progress, and plans for re-evaluation.
  • Provides information to the patient about the proposed intervention including its material risks, expected benefits, and any reasonable alternatives.
  • Informs patient when diagnosis reveals findings outside physical therapy and refer to appropriate practitioners.
  • Directs, supervises, assesses, and communicates with supportive staff.
  • Administers treatment involving application of physical agents, using equipment, moist packets, ultraviolet and infrared lamps, and ultrasound machines.
  • Teaches physical therapy students as well as those in other health professions.
  • Evaluates, fits, and adjusts prosthetic and orthotic devices and recommends modification to orthotist.
  • Provides educational information about physical therapy and physical therapists, injury prevention, ergonomics, and ways to promote health.
  • Refers clients to community resources.
  • Conducts and supports research and applies research findings to practice.
  • All other duties as assigned.
