About The Position

This role provides high-quality physical therapy services to address the needs of students with disabilities, focusing on mobility and functional skills essential for their education. Services include assessment, evaluation, treatment, IEP planning and implementation, discharge planning, documentation, and communication with various stakeholders including teachers, service providers, medical personnel, and families.

Requirements

  • Degree in Physical Therapy from an accredited program
  • Licensed to practice Physical Therapy in the state of Alabama
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the federal and state education rules and regulations which impact a Physical Therapist's role in providing services to students with disabilities in school settings.
  • Thorough knowledge of the theory, principles and methods of physical therapy and their proper application in the educational environment.
  • Considerable knowledge of the equipment and assistive technology available to use in therapy.
  • Knowledge of appropriate evaluating tools.
  • Knowledge of current literature, trends and developments in the field of physical therapy.
  • Knowledge of feeding issues such as food consistency, oral motor functioning, adaptive equipment and specific feeding techniques.
  • Skilled in adapting or designing equipment for individual needs.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments.
  • Possesses the physical and emotional ability to fulfill the contract period.
  • Knowledge of state core curriculum content standards and district educational goals and objectives of instructional specialty to which assigned.
  • Must be able to read a variety of correspondences, medical records, educational records, test results, directives, requests, etc.

Nice To Haves

  • Three years of experience in a similar position is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct appropriate evaluation of students referred for related services under IDEA and prepare written reports of the evaluation and findings.
  • Participate in meetings as a member of the multidisciplinary team.
  • Participate with the school teams to develop Individualized Education Programs.
  • Provide direct and indirect physical therapy in educational settings/least restrictive environments to children.
  • Collaborate with other school personnel regarding physical therapy and the student's needs.
  • Train/instruct teachers, parents and paraprofessionals in delegated techniques and equipment use.
  • Travel to and among schools to provide services.
  • Investigate and recommend types of equipment available to meet student needs, funding sources, and vendor options, including insurance forms and letters of justification.
  • Evaluates and reports on student progress.
  • Develops and maintains documentation of Individualized Education Programs and student progress through the Special Education Tracking System (SETS).
  • Use of appropriate assessment instruments pertinent to areas of therapy.
