Under a valid referral process, this role carries out an individualized program of physical therapy, including assessment, treatment, planning, implementation, education, and effective communication to maximize a patient’s progress toward achieving functional goals. Provides direct patient care within the scope of practice, seeking excellence by utilizing evidence-based or best practice techniques. The therapist will have knowledge and skills to care for the physical and developmental needs of the population age groups receiving services. This role requires kindness and welcoming to all, regardless of gender, ethnicity, race, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, or other factors. The therapist will counsel patients and their families/caregivers about test results and recommended treatment options, involving them in goal setting and treatment decision-making. This role includes appropriate supervision of Physical Therapy Assistants and appropriate use of Rehabilitation Aides. The therapist will continuously monitor patients’ functional needs and progress, adjusting the plan of care as needed to ensure optimal patient outcomes. Clear, concise, and timely documentation is essential, including evaluations, plans of care, daily treatments, progress notes, discharge summaries, and other patient-related communications. The role demonstrates integrity through compliance with insurance regulations, accountable billing procedures, judicious use of patient resources, and HIPAA rules. Maintaining good efficiency through effective use of downtime is also a key function. Compliance with hospital and departmental policies and procedures, Quality Improvement programs, and safety, environmental, and infection control standards is required. The therapist will be supportive of ancillary staff, including clear communication with front office staff and compliance with department procedures for scheduling, cancellations, and no-shows. Encouraging innovation through professional growth and development of self and others via educational programs, in-services, and workshops is expected. Keeping up-to-date on professional literature and communicating in a kind and respectful manner to maintain positive working relationships is crucial. The ability to remain calm in emergency or crisis situations is also necessary.
