About The Position

The Lemuel Shattuck Hospital (LSH) is currently seeking a Physical Therapist II to join our Rehabilitative Services Department! Our team is comprised of a group of dedicated clinical and support staff who work collaboratively to provide evidence-based, patient-centered, compassionate care while supporting the mission, vision and values of the Lemuel Shattuck Hospital and the Department of Public Health. As a Physical Therapist II, you will be responsible for planning and implementing comprehensive physical therapy treatment programs for referred patients that are intended to restore function, relieve pain and prevent disability following disease and/or injury. Our patients are adults (including members of the geriatric population) who are referred to PT from all admitting services including Medicine, Prison Health, Orthopedics/Surgery, the Department of Mental Health as well as by medical providers working within our Ambulatory Care Center (ACC).

Requirements

  • Maintain a strong grasp of human anatomy, physiology, and foundational orthopedic concepts.
  • Demonstrate a solid understanding of physical therapy theory, principles, terminology, and professional practices.
  • Possess a comprehensive knowledge of common physical therapy treatment methods, including both indications and contraindications.
  • Utilize established physical therapy testing and assessment methods with accuracy.
  • Offer clear instruction and guidance in physical therapy procedures and services.
  • Bring appropriate knowledge (or demonstrate a willingness to learn) for fitting, adjusting, and evaluating orthopedic appliances and prosthetic devices.
  • Provide effective supervision/guidance for physical therapy students, rehabilitation aides and physical therapist assistant.
  • Communicate clearly and professionally in both written and verbal formats.
  • Exercise sound judgment while fostering positive and collaborative working relationships.
  • Hold the necessary competencies to deliver safe, effective care for both adult and geriatric populations.
  • Minimum Entrance Requirements: Applicants must have at least one year of full-time, or equivalent part-time, professional experience as a physical therapist.
  • Special Requirements: Possession of a current and valid Physical Therapist license issued by the Massachusetts Division of Licensure Board of Allied Health Professionals in accordance with Chapter 667 of the Acts of 1982.

Responsibilities

  • Perform comprehensive physical therapy evaluations to include assessment of functional mobility status (i.e. bed mobility, transfers, ambulation), skeletal muscle strength/tone, joint range-of-motion, coordination, sensation, proprioception, reflexes, posture, respiratory status, and orthotic/prosthetic fit and function to formulate an individualized treatment plan.
  • Provide a comprehensive plan of care which may include the use of therapeutic exercise, modalities (i.e. hot/cold, ultrasound, e-stim, traction, etc.) as well as assistive devices (i.e. crutches, canes, wheelchairs, etc.) to maximize patient function.
  • Work as part of an interdisciplinary care team while providing rehab-specific updates/recommendations to medical, nursing, case management and social work personnel through meetings, conferences, and written reports.
  • Attend individual patient discharge planning meetings, team meetings and perform home visits (if necessary) to coordinate post-hospital care.
  • Maintain accurate, comprehensive and up-to-date reports regarding patient treatments and progress in the EHR system to ensure quality of care.
  • Delegate assignments to physical therapist assistant and rehabilitation aides while providing appropriate supervision and feedback.
