About The Position

The Outpatient Physical Therapy Assistant (PTA) at Gibson Area Hospital & Health Services will report to the Director of Therapy Services and follow the plan of care established by the physical therapist. This role provides care to patients with dysfunctions in musculoskeletal, cardiopulmonary, neurological, and integumentary systems, incorporating age-specific needs and cultural considerations. The PTA will communicate effectively with internal and external customers, clinical team members, and the therapy department, treating patients in various settings including acute hospital, outpatient, swing beds, and long-term care. Requirements

  • Must have the physical strength to perform lifting tasks: Floor to waist - 40 pounds, 14” to waist - 50 pounds, Waist to shoulder - 20 pounds, Shoulder to overhead - 10 pounds, Carry 40 pounds for 30 feet, Push 40 pounds/force for 30 feet, Pull 40 pounds/force for 15 feet.
  • Current Illinois licensure as a Physical Therapist Assistant or temporary state licensure as a Physical Therapist Assistant.
  • Current cardiopulmonary resuscitation certification.
  • Emotional stability conducive to dealing with moderately stressful situations, and effective working relationships with customers, peers, department and organizational leadership, physicians and other health care providers.
  • Basic computer skills, including use of Microsoft Office, keyboard and mouse.

Nice To Haves

  • Three to six months on the job experience is preferred in order to gain full knowledge of physical therapy techniques and objectives.

Responsibilities

  • Administers clinical interventions consistent with the physical therapist’s goals and plan of care, incorporating age-specific, language, and cultural needs into the individualized treatment plan.
  • Monitors each patient’s responses to treatments and discusses atypical responses with the physical therapist, adjusting the treatment plan as directed.
  • Complies with department documentation policy, ensuring thoroughness, timeliness, and legibility.
  • Communicates effectively with supervising PT, patients, caregivers, referring providers, healthcare team members, department peers, and director.
  • Discusses clinical findings, goals, and treatment plan with patients and, when appropriate, with families/caregivers, involving families in the treatment process, especially with pediatric patients, and ensuring understanding.
  • Participates in discharge planning with patients/caregivers, referring providers, nurses, and social services personnel to promote timely and safe discharge arrangements.
  • Complies with all issues related to patient privacy.
  • Bills for therapy interventions accurately and ethically.
  • Assists in keeping the work area clean, sanitary, and orderly.
  • Collaborates with the physical therapist in overseeing care provided by PTA students and therapy techs.
  • Maintains knowledge of current trends and developments in the field by reading appropriate materials and attending conferences and in-services.
  • Attends and participates in department staff meetings and all facility and department required educational sessions.
  • Supports the Hospital’s and department’s continuous quality improvement efforts.
  • Complies with the organizational attendance policy and use of the electric timekeeping system.
  • Utilizes time efficiently and productively.
  • Manages hours and any overtime and ETO will be preapproved by the Director.
  • Completes all competency/skills assessment requirements.
  • Complies with dress code.
  • Completes requested/required tasks in a timely manner without prompting.
  • Completes other duties as assigned.
