Works under the direction of a Physical Therapist to administer outpatient and inpatient physical therapy treatment techniques, such as exercise, moist heat, ultrasound, electrical stimulation, gait training, and manual therapy. The goal is to restore body functions, relieve pain, and prevent disability following disease, injury, or loss of a body part. This role involves instructing patients on the care and use of assistive devices like braces, canes, crutches, or prosthetic devices. Responsibilities include recording pertinent patient information in the medical record (with co-signature from the supervising Physical Therapist) and actively communicating patient information to the supervisor. The Physical Therapist Assistant also directs patient care activities of Physical Therapist Aides, participates in training programs for other Allied Health departments, and assists with special projects as required. In the absence of the Director or Assistant Director of Rehabilitation, the assistant may supervise department activities. Continuous professional development is expected through literature review, peer review, or continuing education to stay updated on advances in Physical Therapy.
