The Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) is responsible for performing selected physical therapy procedures and carrying out the plan of care under the direction and supervision of a physical therapist. The PTA provides treatments to patients under a therapist's supervision and modifies treatment procedures as indicated by the patient's response and in consultation with the physical therapist. This role involves completing documentation for all patient visits per department policy, performing selected measurements of range of motion, gross strength of muscle groups, length and girth of body parts, and vital signs under the direction of the physical therapist. Additionally, the PTA provides patient, family/caregiver education as directed by the physical therapist and participates in team conferences and discharge planning with departmental staff and/or members of the interdisciplinary team. The position also includes participation in performance improvement, community, and staff education programs, and sharing in the supervision of student interns of Physical Therapist Assistant programs or shadow students. The PTA performs necessary functions to prepare, maintain, and clean up the work area to ensure cleanliness and safety. The PTA has regular access to and is expected to maintain the protected health information of patients in their care. Documentation is required and is in accordance with professional, regulatory, and institutional guidelines. The role may require providing coverage to other Physical Medicine locations and settings as necessary based on patient care/departmental needs. Work schedules are determined to meet patient care/department needs, and shifts may be required on weekends and holidays.
