The Physical Therapist Assistant assists patients, residents, and clients with therapy activities and exercises as outlined in a treatment plan, under the direct supervision of a physical therapist. The primary goal is to enhance the quality of life and improve the ability of patients, residents, and clients to perform daily activities. This role involves providing, monitoring, and recording therapy services for individuals with physical, cognitive, and developmental impairments, adhering to standard concepts, practices, and procedures. The assistant is responsible for selecting, implementing, and modifying therapeutic activities and interventions in line with their competency levels, patient goals, and state licensure requirements. They contribute to the treatment process by exchanging information and providing documentation to the physical therapist regarding patient responses and communications during interventions. Additionally, the Physical Therapist Assistant must be knowledgeable about the patient's targeted physical therapy outcomes and provide relevant information and documentation. The role requires adherence to accepted clinical practice guidelines of professional organizations and may involve performing other related duties as requested. Depending on facility needs and assigned locations, the focus may be on patients receiving intervention in post-acute, long-term care, and home health care environments.
