About The Position

The Middle School Physical Education Teacher is responsible for planning and delivering engaging, developmentally appropriate physical education instruction that promotes physical fitness, health, and overall wellness. The teacher fosters a safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environment while encouraging students to develop lifelong healthy habits, teamwork, and sportsmanship.

Requirements

  • Exceptional knowledge of the needs of students.
  • Knowledge of physical education principles, health education, and child development.
  • Ability to motivate and engage middle school students in physical activity.
  • Knowledge needed to read and interpret documents such as safety rules and to speak effectively with middle-aged students and/or employees in a school environment.
  • Knowledge of federal and state special education laws and regulations.
  • Knowledge of effective and innovative instructional and student evaluation techniques.
  • Strong skills in classroom management, collaboration, and differentiated instruction.
  • Strong communication skills with students, staff, administration, and the public.
  • Understanding a child’s behavior and dynamics.
  • Skilled in problem solving and patience.
  • Ability to establish and effective working relationships with students, staff and the community.
  • Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.
  • Ability to fulfill the dexterity and physical requirements of the work and effectively attend to students.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Ability to subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measurement, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Application of percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations is required.
  • South Carolina certification in Physical Education/Health
  • Experience with differentiated instruction and inclusive teaching practices
  • Familiar with educational technology tools
  • Strong classroom management skills and a growth-oriented mindset
  • Must have and maintain a valid Driver’s License or ability to provide own transportation
  • May be required to travel to school district buildings and professional meetings
  • Prior to beginning employment, negative tb test results must be provided
  • Applicants must submit official transcripts, three professional references with at least one supervisory reference and a copy of the appropriate credentials as part of the application process.
  • The recommended candidate will be required to provide personal information necessary to complete the background check such as date of birth, gender, and race to remain in compliance with applicable laws and regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and implement a comprehensive physical education curriculum aligned with state and district standards.
  • Provide instruction in a variety of physical activities, including team sports, individual fitness, and cooperative games.
  • Assess and monitor student progress in physical fitness, skill development, and knowledge of health concepts.
  • Promote physical fitness, wellness, and healthy lifestyle choices.
  • Establish and maintain a safe and structured environment for all physical activities.
  • Adapt instruction to meet the diverse needs, interests, and abilities of students.
  • Teach and reinforce rules, techniques, and sportsmanship.
  • Maintain appropriate student behavior and classroom management in gymnasium and outdoor settings.
  • Collaborate with colleagues, administrators, and parents to support student success.
  • Maintain accurate records of attendance, grades, and student progress.
  • Ensure proper use, care, and inventory of equipment and facilities.
  • Participate in school-related activities, meetings, and professional development.
  • Follow all district policies, procedures, and safety guidelines.
