About The Position

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) is seeking a teacher for the Newcomer Youth Summer Academy (NYSA) to create and lead physical education classes for elementary school students. The NYSA is a six-week program designed to prepare newly arrived refugee youth for success in the New York City public school system. Up to 130 students, aged 5-21, from over 20 countries will participate in various classes, including physical education, with a focus on team sports and game play. The role also aims to foster students' social-emotional development and build a strong sense of community.

Requirements

  • Experience with teaching, leading, or coaching group sports programming required.
  • Fluency in written and spoken English required.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in mandatory school programming.
  • Participate in instructional planning sessions, trainings, and all program meetings.
  • Plan and implement a culturally and developmentally-responsive curriculum.
  • Submit daily lesson plans on a weekly basis in advance of the date of instruction.
  • Utilize multilingual instructional approaches for English Language Learners.
  • Collaborate with Classroom Culture Lead Teachers and staff in planning and reviewing student progress.
  • Lead classroom climate in accordance with Academy philosophy and protocols.
  • Collaborate with teachers, administrators, and families to create strategies that support student success.
  • Engage in instructional coaching cycles and participate in weekly meetings.
  • Pending demand, provide early and/or after-care supervision to a cohort of students.
  • Review student progress and make instructional adjustments as needed.
  • Substitute as needed for colleagues' classes.
  • Complete All Staff Survey to provide feedback on NYSA.
  • Comply with all IRC policies and protocols.
  • Other duties as assigned.
