About The Position

The Physical Education, Health & Wellness Teacher at Whitcomb Middle School is responsible for promoting student learning and growth by providing high-quality instruction, implementing authentic assessments, analyzing student data to improve teaching, and offering continuous constructive feedback. The role involves maintaining high expectations, creating a safe and effective learning environment, and demonstrating cultural proficiency. Collaboration with families, caregivers, community members, and organizations is essential, as is maintaining an ethical, culturally proficient, skilled, and collaborative professional practice.

Requirements

Must be certified by the Massachusetts Department of Education in Physical Education (covering grades 6-8).
Must be certified by the Massachusetts Department of Education in Health/Family and Consumer Sciences (covering grades 6-8).
Bachelor’s or higher earned academic degree.
Technology Use – School System Data base, standard Microsoft and Google products and web-based sites.
Learning Strategies — Selecting and using instructional methods and procedures appropriate for the situation.
Written and Oral Comprehension and Expression — Read and understand information in writing and listen to and understand spoken information and ideas. Able to communicate information and ideas in speaking and writing so others will understand.
Team Player— Being respectful as part of a team and displaying constructive, collaborative behaviors.

Bilingual (Spanish and/or Portuguese) a plus.

Responsibilities

Teaches wellness/physical education and health classes.
Promotes school health/wellness and health awareness activities (curricular and extracurricular) for students, staff, and parents.
Meets and instructs assigned classes in the locations and at the times designated.
Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of the subject matter and pedagogy by engaging students in learning experiences that enable them to acquire complex knowledge and skills.
Demonstrates knowledge of developmental levels of students and different learning styles by providing differentiated learning experiences.
Designs units of instruction with measurable outcomes and challenging tasks requiring higher-order thinking skills aligned with state standards/local curricula.
Designs and administers informal and formal assessments, including common interim assessments, to measure student learning, growth, and progress.
Organizes and analyzes assessment results to determine progress and adjusts practice accordingly, implementing differentiated interventions and enhancements for all students, including those with disabilities and English learners.
Provides descriptive feedback based on assessment results and engages students and families in constructive conversations about performance improvement.
Defines high expectations for student work quality and perseverance.
Uses instructional practices that motivate and engage students.
Develops and maintains an environment conducive to effective learning within district-provided resources.
Prepares for assigned classes and shows evidence of preparation upon request.
Employs a variety of instructional techniques and media, consistent with physical limitations and student needs.
Encourages students to set and maintain standards of classroom behavior.
Uses rituals, routines, and responses to create and maintain a safe physical and intellectual environment where students take academic risks and disruptive behaviors are prevented.
Uses strategies and practices that enable students to demonstrate respect for and affirm differences related to background, identity, language, strengths, and challenges.
Shares conclusions about student progress with colleagues and seeks feedback on instructional or assessment practices.
Establishes and maintains open lines of communication with students and parents.
Updates parents on curriculum and suggests strategies for supporting learning at home and school, including adaptations for students with disabilities or limited English proficiency.
Employs two-way communication with families about student performance and learning, responding promptly and respectfully.
Shows understanding of and sensitivity to different families' home language, culture, and values.
Strives to implement the district’s philosophy of education and instructional goals and objectives.
