About The Position

Lightmatter is hiring a Photonics Architect to define the microarchitecture for a photonic-based communication fabric used in its Passage product. The role partners with internal engineering teams to deliver products, creating detailed technical documents that specify what needs to be built. It requires knowledge of process technology and photonics design, along with clear communication skills. The work spans component-level design through top-level layout for a high-bandwidth, low-latency photonic interconnect and switch fabric. The Photonics Architect reports directly to the Sr. Director of Architecture and works closely with photonic and analog teams to define and optimize features that improve the next-generation product’s power, performance, and area. The role is part of a collaborative team developing new computing technology from the ground up.

Requirements

  • PhD in electrical engineering, physics, applied physics, or a discipline related to photonics.
  • In-depth knowledge of photonic devices and semiconductor physics.
  • Experience with integrated silicon photonics components.
  • Ability and desire to collaborate in a cross-disciplinary team.
  • Demonstrated strong problem-solving skills, particularly for problems without obvious solutions.
  • Capacity to comply with federally mandated U.S. export control requirements.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with photonic simulation tools such as FDTD, umerical, Verilog-A, or VPI Photonics.

Responsibilities

  • Propose photonic designs for product components, including modulators, receivers, multiplexers, lasers, and amplifiers.
  • Work with the photonic engineering design team to provide performance, power, and area estimates for photonic devices within Passage.
  • Collaborate with the analog engineering team to provide a high-bandwidth photonic interconnect solution.
  • Author, review, and validate architectural specifications.

Benefits

  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage.
  • Retirement savings matching program.
  • Basic and voluntary life insurance and AD&D coverage.
  • Vacation, sick time, and public holidays.
  • Paid family leave.
  • Short-term and long-term disability coverage.
  • Training and development.
  • Commuter benefits.
  • Flexible, hybrid workplace model.
  • Equity grants for eligible full-time employees.
