About The Position

The Hamilton Spectator is seeking an emerging photojournalist with a blend of traditional photojournalism skills and digital proficiency. This role involves photography and videography, but also requires writing and reporting abilities to produce complete stories. This is a year-long paid internship based in Hamilton, where the intern will collaborate with full-time staff, earn bylines and credits, and create impactful work. The position requires flexibility for early morning, evening, and weekend assignments.

Requirements

  • Early-career photojournalist with some journalism experience (previous internships, roles in various organizations, freelance, or non-traditional outlets).
  • Creative photojournalist capable of covering diverse assignments.
  • Enthusiastic and curious emerging journalist.
  • Experience using Photoshop and Photo Mechanic.
  • Photo and video journalism experience outside of school assignments.
  • Demonstrated commitment to journalism as a career.
  • Strong writing and reporting skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Must have own gear.
  • Must have a valid driver’s licence.
  • Must have access to a vehicle.

Responsibilities

  • Cover a wide variety of assignments including news, sports, and feature portraits.
  • Produce text, still images, and video for assignments.
  • Bring new perspectives and strong news judgment to work at The Spectator.
  • Work from home, the Hamilton office, and in the community for assignments.
