About The Position

This role is for a self-motivated, driven, creative, and committed Photographer who will produce high-quality content for Newport News Shipbuilding. The qualified candidate will thrive in a fast-paced environment, capturing content with a strong emphasis on visual storytelling. The role requires immersing oneself into the shipyard environment, becoming familiar with operations, and collaborating with all departments in office, studio, and waterfront settings. The Photographer will be responsible for using a variety of cameras to capture content of company products, facilities, employees, and guests for internal and public communication channels. They will also edit, deliver, and archive imagery with proper file size and type. The position involves photographing studio headshots with professional studio lighting equipment and environmental portraits with off-camera lighting. Printing photographs on large format printers is also a responsibility. The Photographer will capture images of products, persons, buildings, machinery, equipment, parts, and other subjects for promotion, marketing, publicity, manufacturing, engineering, or administrative needs. This includes arranging equipment, loading film, setting cameras, exposing and developing film, and enlarging/reducing prints. The shipyard is an industrial environment, and the candidate must be prepared to work in such settings, requiring extensive site surveys, logistics planning, and physical work, including lifting and climbing. The role also involves documenting work on ships, both in the shipyard and at sea, and from elevated locations. This position is part of the company’s emergency response organization. While work is primarily on first shift, the candidate must be available to work outside of first shift hours, including weekends, as assignments dictate, including support for special events.

Requirements

  • Associate's Degree and 1 year of relevant experience
  • NNS Apprentice School graduate (may be used as equivalent to Associate's Degree)
  • Navy Nuclear Power School (NNPS) graduate (may be used as equivalent to Associate's Degree)
  • High School/GED and 2 years of related Manufacturing, Shipbuilding, Trades, Military experience (may be used as equivalent to Associate's Degree)
  • High School/GED and 4 years of non-related Manufacturing, Shipbuilding, Trades, Military experience (may be used as equivalent to Associate's Degree)
  • US Citizenship Required

Nice To Haves

  • Proficient technical camera skills with the ability to take photographs in manual mode on professional grade DSLR cameras.
  • Extensive experience taking photos in outdoor and indoor environments with on camera and off camera lighting equipment when needed.
  • Portrait skills to include lighting setup and skills to coach individuals through a portrait session.
  • Proficient in Adobe Creative Suite – specifically Lightroom and Photoshop.
  • FAA-Certified Drone Pilot license to fly a drone at NNS and surrounding areas to capture photo/video content for the company.
  • Experience with video creation, editing and producing.
  • Experience in other Adobe Creative Suite programs such as InDesign, Premiere etc.
  • Printing skills to include setting up files to print on large format printers as well as handling large prints.

  • Use a variety of still cameras and related equipment.
  • Work in an industrial shipyard environment, requiring extensive site surveys, logistics planning, and physical work, including lifting and climbing.
  • Document work on ships in the shipyard and at sea, and from elevated locations.
  • Be part of the company’s emergency response organization.
  • Work outside of first shift hours, including weekends, as assignments dictate, including support of various special events.
