About The Position

We’re looking for an Equipment Lead to join our Equipment team at Icon Studios LA. We seek someone who has experience in a fast paced environment that knows how to proactively manage and track equipment both in house and sub-rented. In addition to equipment knowledge, this person should be well versed in digital equipment and motion equipment, IE; digi-carts, monitors, cable management, RED camera, cinema lenses, and camera support. This person should have solid proficiency working cross functionally with production and digital teams. We seek a leader who can grow a team of players with clear direction, collaboration, and an ability to run point. This leader will explore new ways of thinking and problem solving as well as having the ability to manage multiple projects in a time-sensitive environment, while keeping production moving forward. This role will be on the ground assisting with equipment set up and changeover in our client's LA Icon Photo and Film Studio. Will schedule and direct the flow of the editorial floor with 8 bays. Will need to make sure the bays are built, lit, and metered for start of shooting early in the morning. Will assist with moving people from one bay to another which can change styles of shooting etc. Will be in meetings to plan production and go over future planning. They will need to get to know the team to properly schedule the right people for the right role. The role does not entail any heavy lifting but does require the ETW to be on their feet and moving quite a lot during the day. Candidate should be prepared for that aspect of the role.

Requirements

  • 4+ years of studio managing experience
  • Proven ability to support and lead peers in new workflows and processes.
  • A knowledge base of grip and lighting that puts safety as a priority
  • Experience with creating and replicating detailed lighting diagrams.
  • Ability to balance multiple time sensitive projects at once in addition to the daily responsibilities
  • Expert level communication, listening, and organization skills.
  • A keen eye for detail, cleanliness and organization
  • A strong ability to problem solve camera/lighting malfunctions and errors in real time.
  • Quality control, troubleshoot, and log malfunctioning equipment to send out for repair when necessary.
  • 5 years direct experience required
  • Experience leading a small team
  • Experience on a film and photo set
  • Must have an in-depth understanding of lighting and grip
  • Candidate should be prepared to be on their feet and moving quite a lot during the day.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Blue Circle or TrakIt equipment tracking software is a plus.
  • Experience with cinema cameras is a plus - Red Komodo X
  • Proficiency with basic Microsoft Suite, AirTable and Figma is a plus.
  • Someone who can communicate effectively, can anticipate needs of the team without being told what the next steps are.

Responsibilities

  • Leading a shift of 3 to 4 team members in daily support of 5+ working photo sets.
  • Overseeing daily inventory tracking.
  • Inputting equipment lists in Blue Circle (tracking system) to support e commerce, editorial, and motion sets.
  • Reading, following, and measuring out detailed lighting diagrams.
  • Guiding peers day to day with building sets to spec by using our lighting diagram SOP’s.
  • Adapting on the fly with lighting changes, set flips, and shoot schedule changes.
  • Learning new processes and advocating for efficiencies in time and organization.
  • Leading a diverse team with clear direction, resilient governance, and a team-based approach.
  • Scheduling and directing the flow of the editorial floor with 8 bays.
  • Ensuring bays are built, lit, and metered for start of shooting.
  • Assisting with moving people from one bay to another.
  • Attending meetings to plan production and go over future planning.
  • Getting to know the team to properly schedule the right people for the right role.
  • Scheduling team members according to their skill set.
  • Scheduling and working with Stage hands, Grips, Gaffers, Camera operators and set up staff.
