About The Position

The Photo Intern helps The Dallas Morning News deliver visual journalism to a North Texas audience. From the first week, the intern is expected to perform like a staff member by shooting and editing still photographs and video under tight deadlines, and by using social media for professional purposes. Editors and photographers will provide feedback on visual storytelling and technique, including lighting, composition, lens work, cropping, toning, captions, and video editing. The internship offers opportunities to learn from experienced photographers and build preparation for entering the workforce full time.

Requirements

• Effective organization, a smooth workflow, and technical excellence to complete a heavy shooting workload.
• Positive energy, intelligence, excellent written and verbal language skills, grace under pressure, attention to detail, and big-picture vision.
• A valid driver's license and registered vehicle for travel to assignments.

Responsibilities

• Shoot and edit still photographs and video.
• Write accurate and compelling photo captions.
• Work under tight deadline pressures.
• Use social media on the job for professional purposes.
• Work with editors to develop coverage that resonates with the digital audience.
• Transmit work on deadline and submit numerous images for slideshows.
• Send smartphone stills and/or video from breaking news or live events.
• Occasionally shoot SLR video.
• Potentially work on short- or long-term projects.
