Mercyhealth is seeking a dedicated Phlebotomy Technician to join their team. This role involves performing a variety of tasks related to patient registration, sample collection, and laboratory processing. The ideal candidate will be proficient in using hospital and laboratory information systems, possess excellent patient interaction skills, and adhere strictly to safety and infection control protocols. This position requires the ability to work independently with minimal supervision and may involve driving to client sites. Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
Successful completion of a phlebotomy course or previous phlebotomy experience preferred.
Experience as a Paramedic, EMT, or MA helpful.
Must be able to work independently with minimal supervision.

Nice To Haves

Phlebotomy Certification preferred.

Responsibilities

Proficiently use Hospital Information System (HIS) and Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) for patient registration, order release, and data entry.
Perform patient registration, collect payments, and enter demographic and insurance information.
Transfer patient test requests from various sources into HIS and laboratory computer systems.
Answer and screen telephone calls professionally.
Resolve unclear test orders by contacting physicians, nurses, or reference laboratories, and document actions taken.
Generate lists, labels, and daily reports.
Review order monitor and investigate the collection summary report.
Assess orders for special collection requirements, patient preparation, and appropriate order of draw.
Accurately identify patients using two identifiers and proficiently perform phlebotomy to obtain blood specimens.
Adhere to safety protocols and infection control practices.
Assess patient response to procedures and interact with patients in an understandable and comfortable manner.
Accurately identify and label specimens with required patient information and collector code.
Ensure specimen integrity using aseptic technique and appropriate procedures.
Collect various samples including throat swabs, MRSA swabs, urine samples, heel sticks, finger sticks, blood cultures, and blood bank specimens.
Perform arterial punctures for blood specimen collection from adults (RMH Phlebotomy only).
Perform glucose tolerance and hormone stimulation specimen collection within specified time increments, including accurate patient preparation.
Collect specimens for research programs, Lab One, and special collection kits.
Provide patient instructions for self-collected specimens.
Perform specialized sample collections such as breath alcohol testing, random, pre-employment, and legal urine drug screens.
Receive, accession, and centrifuge collected specimens using LIS, examine for testing acceptability, and aliquot as needed.
Deliver specimens to the appropriate laboratory section or batch for courier pick-up.
Notify testing personnel of stat requests.
Accept specimens from internal and external customers, sort samples, and resolve identification or requisition issues.
Utilize LIS to receive specimens, package, and track specimens for transportation to reference laboratories.
Possess working knowledge of insurance processes for reference laboratories to ensure compliant billing.
Be knowledgeable of general insurance information related to registration and basic billing rules.
Drive laboratory personal vehicle to client sites, patient homes, or facilities to perform accurate specimen collection and transport specimens to the lab.
Perform limited waived testing, including blood glucose monitoring.
Perform rapid flu and strep tests, mono testing, pregnancy testing, and dipstick urinalysis (depending on location).
Perform quality control procedures and proficiency testing.
Call critical results to the appropriate licensed caregiver and chart reports.
Perform electrocardiogram tracing (ten lead and pediatric EKGs) if required by location.
Communicate critical results to authorized personnel (legacy Rockford locations only).
Perform result entry in the LIS.
Perform temperature checks.
Clean and check laboratory glassware.
Assist with inventory and maintenance of supplies, submit orders for acquisition, receive and stock supplies, and fill supply requests.
Assist with orientation and training of new partners, coach in customer service excellence, and assure competence of new partners.
Provide input for performance evaluations to the phlebotomy supervisor.
Provide mentorship to phlebotomy staff as needed.
Work collaboratively with the supervisor to ensure adequate staffing and skill mix.
Evaluate new products and provide written documentation of evaluation activities.
Demonstrate exemplary phlebotomy skills and serve as a resource to the phlebotomy team.
Take ownership of the department, identify areas for improvement, and make suggestions to the Phlebotomy Supervisor.
Possess the ability to resolve issues.
