About The Position

Mercyhealth is seeking a dedicated Phlebotomy Technician to join their integrated health system. This role involves performing a wide range of duties related to patient registration, sample collection, and laboratory system management. The technician will be responsible for accurate patient identification, specimen collection, adherence to safety protocols, and maintaining patient comfort. The position requires proficiency in various laboratory information systems, handling of different specimen types, and potentially performing limited waived testing. The technician will also be involved in customer service, training new staff, and maintaining supply levels. This role offers the opportunity to work independently with minimal supervision within a supportive team environment.

Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
Successful completion of a phlebotomy course or previous phlebotomy experience preferred.
Experience as a Paramedic, EMT, or MA helpful.
Phlebotomy Certification preferred.
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

Responsibilities

Proficiently perform phlebotomy on patients to obtain blood specimens, accurately identifying patients using two identifiers.
Perform patient registration, collect payments, and enter demographic and insurance information into the Hospital Information System (HIS) and Laboratory Information Systems (LIS).
Transfer patient test requests from various sources into HIS and laboratory computer systems.
Answer and screen telephone calls professionally.
Resolve unclear test orders by contacting physicians or nurses, documenting actions, and referring unresolved issues to supervisors.
Generate lists, labels, and run daily reports.
Review and investigate the collection summary report.
Assess orders for special collection requirements, patient preparation, and appropriate order of draw.
Adhere to safety protocols and infection control practices.
Assess patient response to procedures and interact in an understandable and comfortable manner.
Accurately identify and label specimens with required information.
Ensure specimen integrity using aseptic technique and appropriate procedures.
Collect various samples including throat swabs, MRSA swabs, urine samples, heel sticks, finger sticks, blood cultures, and blood bank specimens.
Perform arterial punctures for blood specimen collection (RMH Phlebotomy only).
Perform glucose tolerance and hormone stimulation specimen collection within specified time increments.
Collect specimens for research programs and special collection kits.
Provide patient instructions for self-collected specimens.
Perform specialized sample collections such as breath alcohol testing and various urine drug screens.
Receive, accession, and process collected specimens using LIS, ensuring acceptability, centrifuging, aliquoting, and delivering to the appropriate laboratory section or preparing for courier pickup.
Notify testing personnel of stat requests.
Accept specimens from internal and external customers, sort samples, resolve identification or requisition issues, and package/track specimens for transportation.
Possess working knowledge of insurance processes for reference laboratories to ensure compliant billing.
Drive laboratory vehicle to client sites, patient homes, or facilities to perform specimen collection and transport specimens to the lab.
Perform limited waived testing, including blood glucose monitoring.
Perform rapid flu and strep tests, mono testing, pregnancy testing, and dipstick urinalysis as directed.
Perform quality control procedures and proficiency testing.
Communicate critical results to authorized personnel.
Perform result entry in the LIS.
Perform temperature checks.
Clean and check laboratory glassware.
Assist with inventory and maintenance of supplies, including ordering, stocking, and filling requests.
Assist with orientation and training of new staff, coaching in customer service, and providing input for performance evaluations.
Provide mentorship to phlebotomy staff.
Collaborate with supervisors to ensure adequate staffing and skill mix.
Evaluate new products and provide written documentation.
Demonstrate exemplary phlebotomy skills and serve as a resource to the team.
Take ownership of the department, identify areas for improvement, and resolve issues.
