This position involves collecting, labeling, and transporting patient specimens for testing in a timely manner, including routine and advanced venipuncture. The role upholds organizational values by providing exemplary customer service throughout the pre-analytical and analytical processes. Responsibilities include initiating intervention on unacceptable specimens, adhering to strict patient identification protocols, and performing venipunctures as ordered. The Phlebotomy Tech processes emergency orders, labels specimens accurately, and operates departmental computer programs for order management and troubleshooting. They reconcile outstanding test orders, practice universal precautions, and maintain adequate supply levels. Preventive maintenance on equipment is performed, and issues with specimen registration, collection, or processing are resolved. Specimen processing procedures may be performed, and the role may involve assuming coordinator responsibilities in the absence of supervisory staff. Identifying, documenting, and escalating issues are key, along with performing basic clerical duties. Training new staff or students and participating in quality improvement activities are also part of the role. The position requires working with a supervisor for professional development and attending educational in-services for necessary computer systems. Additional duties may be assigned as required. For clinic-based roles, responsibilities include reviewing test requisitions, ordering tests appropriately, providing instructions for non-blood specimen collections, maintaining standing order files, scheduling appointments, preparing and triaging specimens, and obtaining waivers for Medicare coverage. For hospital-based roles, responsibilities include maintaining and utilizing computerized WOW carts, adhering to patient isolation procedures, maintaining phone availability for emergent collections, and interacting with clinical staff to maintain computerized records and resolve specimen/collection issues.
