The Phlebotomy Tech is responsible for collecting, labeling, and transporting patient specimens for testing in a timely manner, including routine and advanced venipuncture. This role upholds the organization's values by providing exemplary customer service throughout the pre-analytical and analytical processes. The technician may initiate intervention on unacceptable specimens and adheres to strict protocol regarding patient identification, ensuring each patient is positively identified before any specimen collection. They collect patient blood samples by performing venipunctures as ordered and within the prescribed time-frame, following strict medical protocol. Processing of all emergency orders (STATS and Timed Studies) within the required timeframe, accurate labeling of specimens, and operation of departmental computer programs for order activation, management, and troubleshooting are key duties. The role involves reconciling outstanding test orders, practicing universal precautions, barrier protection, and infection control. Maintaining adequate stock of commonly used supplies, performing preventive maintenance on equipment, and taking prompt action to resolve issues with specimen registration, collection, or processing are also required. The Phlebotomy Tech may perform specimen processing procedures, assume coordinator responsibilities in the absence of supervisory staff, and identify, understand, and document issues, escalating to supervision when appropriate. Basic clerical duties, assisting in training new staff or students, and participating in quality improvement activities are part of the role. Professional development is supported through supervisor collaboration and attendance at educational in-services and training classes for necessary computer systems. Additional duties as required are also part of the scope. For Clinic-Based roles, responsibilities may include reviewing test requisitions, ordering tests appropriately, following up on incomplete information, and providing instructions to patients and outreach clients regarding non-blood specimen collections. Maintaining standing order files and scheduling lab appointments may also be involved, along with preparing and triaging specimens to the proper testing facility and obtaining waivers for Medicare coverage. For Hospital-Based roles, maintaining and utilizing computerized WOW carts, adhering to patient isolation procedures, maintaining phone availability for emergent collections, and interacting with clinical staff to maintain computerized records and resolve outstanding specimen/collection issues are expected.
