The Phlebotomy Technician I primarily performs skin puncture or venipuncture on patients of all ages for the purpose of obtaining a blood specimen for analysis in the clinical laboratory and is under the supervision of the Laboratory Director / Manager / Supervisor. This role involves various duties including computer data entry, filing, telephone communication, and other clerical duties. The technician must possess adequate knowledge of laboratory test terminology, demonstrate good communication and telephone etiquette, and exhibit proper phlebotomy techniques and equipment usage for patients ranging from newborns to geriatrics. Responsibilities also include processing various types of specimens (microbiology, immunology, hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, chemistry, and blood bank), preparing specimens for referral to reference laboratories, stocking routine supplies, maintaining cleanliness of work areas and equipment, and processing or loading specimens on automated laboratory instrumentation. Additionally, the role may involve assisting with sample pick-up, sorting samples for analysis, assisting laboratory specialties, inventory management, replenishing and ordering supplies, mail pick-up/delivery, faxing, answering phones, and handling product deliveries. Other tasks may be assigned by the department manager/director.
