The Phlebotomy Technician I primarily performs skin puncture or venipuncture on patients of all ages for the purpose of obtaining a blood specimen for analysis in the clinical laboratory and is under the supervision of the Laboratory Director / Manager / Supervisor. This role involves various duties including computer data entry, filing, telephone communication, and other clerical tasks. The technician must possess adequate knowledge of laboratory test terminology, demonstrate good communication and telephone etiquette, and apply proper phlebotomy techniques and equipment usage for patients ranging from newborns to geriatrics. Responsibilities extend to processing various types of specimens (microbiology, immunology, hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, chemistry, blood bank), preparing specimens for referral to reference laboratories, stocking routine supplies, and maintaining the cleanliness of laboratory areas and equipment. Additionally, the role may involve processing or loading specimens on automated laboratory instrumentation, assisting with sample pick-up (hospital/OR), sorting samples for analysis, assisting lab specialties, inventory management, replenishing and ordering supplies, mail handling, faxing, answering phones, and managing product deliveries. Other tasks may be assigned by the department manager/director.
