The Phlebotomy Supervisor, Clinical Lab Operations, is responsible for performing routine procedures of a Medical Lab Scientist, including collecting and analyzing data that affects patient care decisions. This role requires maintaining strong technical proficiency and working knowledge of procedures. The supervisor will participate in patient testing as needed, assist and support technical staff with routine testing, preventive maintenance, technical studies, and troubleshooting, and support innovation through new test development and the implementation of new testing platforms. In terms of lab operations, the supervisor ensures quality in all aspects of laboratory operations, coordinating with leadership on testing and reporting. They aid in selecting appropriate methodologies, verifying procedures, and establishing performance characteristics. Additionally, they ensure procedure manuals are current, available, and reviewed annually, and that all employees are educated and trained on revisions. For personnel management and development, the supervisor oversees reporting personnel, participates in recruitment, hiring, onboarding, training, development, and retention. They mentor and develop staff, identify and correct personnel management issues, and conduct ongoing evaluations and mentoring, including annual performance evaluations. They ensure staff are appropriately trained and determine/monitor continuing education goals, providing educational opportunities. The supervisor also ensures departmental and medical center initiatives, priorities, standards, and policies are communicated and understood. In regulatory and compliance, they maintain compliance with TJC, HIPAA, and other accreditation standards, design/implement programs for compliance, and track relevant laws and regulations. They ensure safety standards are maintained and enforce infection prevention and safe work practices. For budget management, they assist with fiscal responsibilities, monitor budget expenditures, identify and manage variances, track revenue/expenses, and provide reports. They may also track funding and assist in preparing the fiscal budget. For quality assurance, the supervisor manages the quality of testing processes through audits, monitors indicators of high-quality processes, identifies and leads improvement activities, and provides day-to-day operational leadership in a CAP certified laboratory.
