A Phlebotomy Technician is an integral member of the medical laboratory team. The primary function is collecting blood samples from patients by venipuncture or micro techniques, facilitating the collection and transportation of laboratory specimens, and serving as a point of contact between patients and the medical laboratory. Professional behavior, adherence to standards of practice, patient safety, and a cordial demeanor with patients of all ages are essential. Phlebotomists work under the supervision of a Laboratory Director and Chief Phlebotomist. The role requires fine motor coordination, clear speech, normal hearing, good visual acuity for distinguishing colors, use of both hands, legible handwriting, good communication skills, and the ability to move readily between workplace locations. Occasional light lifting, stooping, and bending are necessary. Working conditions expose phlebotomists to communicable diseases common to a clinic environment.
