About The Position

This full-time Phlebotomist position involves a variety of duties focused on patient registration, sample collection, and laboratory support. The role requires proficiency in hospital and laboratory information systems, accurate patient identification, and the ability to perform phlebotomy on diverse patient populations. Responsibilities include collecting various types of specimens, performing limited waived testing, maintaining laboratory supplies, and assisting with the training of new staff. The position also involves driving to client sites for specimen collection and ensuring specimen integrity and proper handling. Critical results must be communicated to appropriate caregivers, and data entry into the LIS is required. The role emphasizes adherence to safety protocols, infection control, and excellent customer service.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Successful completion of a phlebotomy course or previous phlebotomy experience preferred.
  • Experience as a Paramedic, EMT, or MA helpful.
  • Phlebotomy Certification preferred.
  • Must be able to work independently with minimal supervision.

Responsibilities

  • Proficiently use Hospital Information System (HIS) and Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) for order release and patient registration.
  • Perform patient registration, collect payments, and enter demographic and insurance information.
  • Transfer patient test requests from various sources into HIS and laboratory computer systems.
  • Answer and screen telephone calls professionally.
  • Resolve or refer unclear test orders to the appropriate supervisor.
  • Generate lists, labels, and run daily reports.
  • Review and investigate the collection summary report.
  • Assess orders for special collection requirements, patient preparation, and order of draw.
  • Accurately identify patients using two patient identifiers.
  • Perform phlebotomy on patients to obtain blood specimens.
  • Adhere to safety protocols and infection control practices.
  • Assess patient response to procedures and interact appropriately.
  • Accurately identify and label specimens with required information.
  • Ensure specimen integrity using aseptic technique and appropriate procedures.
  • Collect various samples including throat swabs, MRSA swabs, urine samples, heel sticks, finger sticks, blood cultures, and blood bank specimens.
  • Perform arterial punctures for blood specimen collection (RMH Phlebotomy only).
  • Perform glucose tolerance and hormone stimulation specimen collection.
  • Collect specimens for research programs and special collection kits.
  • Provide patient instructions for self-collected specimens.
  • Perform specialized sample collections such as breath alcohol testing and urine drug screens.
  • Receive, accession, and examine collected specimens using LIS.
  • Centrifuge and aliquot specimens as needed, and deliver to the appropriate laboratory section.
  • Notify testing personnel of stat requests.
  • Accept specimens from internal and external customers, sort samples, and resolve identification or requisition issues.
  • Package and track specimens for transportation to reference laboratories.
  • Understand insurance processes for reference laboratories to ensure proper billing.
  • Drive laboratory personal vehicle to client sites, patient homes, or facilities for specimen collection.
  • Transport specimens properly to the lab.
  • Perform limited waived testing including blood glucose monitoring.
  • Perform rapid flu and strep tests, mono testing, pregnancy testing, and dipstick urinalysis (depending on location).
  • Perform quality control procedures and proficiency testing.
  • Call critical results to the appropriate licensed caregiver and chart reports.
  • Perform electrocardiogram tracing (ten lead and pediatric EKGs) (depending on location).
  • Communicate critical results to authorized personnel (legacy Rockford locations only).
  • Perform result entry in the LIS.
  • Perform temperature checks and clean laboratory glassware.
  • Assist with inventory and maintenance of supplies.
  • Submit orders for supply acquisition, receive, and stock supplies.
  • Fill supply requests from clients and providers.
  • Assist with orientation and training of new partners, coaching in customer service excellence.
  • Provide input for performance evaluations of phlebotomy partners.
  • Provide mentorship to phlebotomy staff.
  • Work collaboratively with supervisors to ensure adequate staffing and skill mix.
  • Evaluate new products and provide documentation.
  • Demonstrate exemplary phlebotomy skills and serve as a resource to the team.
  • Take ownership of the department, identify areas for improvement, and make suggestions.
  • Resolve issues independently.
