The Phlebotomist will be responsible for verifying positive patient identification, assessing patient reactions to specimen procurement, and performing venipuncture and collecting other specimens from newborn, pediatric, and adult patients according to established protocol. This role also involves obtaining medical assistance when necessary, obtaining specimens according to priority and scheduled draw times, and ensuring the completion of specimen collection functions according to protocol. The Phlebotomist will ensure specimens are properly labeled and suitable for testing, resolve specimen identification and/or requisition problems, and clarify requests. Additionally, the role includes performing limited testing under CLIA guidelines, answering and screening telephone calls, assisting with inventory, and maintaining supplies and equipment. The Phlebotomist will also provide assistance in support of Billing and other business functions, accept specimens from various customers, receive and sort specimens, and package and track specimens for transport. Processing specimens for testing, including aliquoting, pre-analytical steps, and loading instruments, while maintaining proper specimen identification, is also a key responsibility. The role requires responding to additional specimen procurement requests, ordering and verifying test requests, documenting appropriate information for quality assurance/improvement, running quality control checks, and taking appropriate action to notify providers of stat, critical, and other abnormal results. Laboratory result entry in the computer system, performing internal and external proficiency testing, and reviewing various pending and management reports are also part of the duties. The Phlebotomist will also generate and distribute reports and instruct employees and students in phlebotomy, data entry, and specimen processing functions. The incumbent must demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served.
